  7. SOLD: Robbie Hughes D Chanter D chanter with C key, made by Robbie Hughes, Co Down. Ebony, brass, fake ivory. Reeded by Alan Moller. It's a good solid chanter with plenty of character. I bought it new in 1999/2000 and it has served me well. It's not pristine, it's had a life - it shows a little scuffing on the cap and top ivory ring, for example. I don't play so much these days and have an alternative chanter by Colin Jerry for when I do. Sorry to see it go but these days my children are overtaking me musically and my daughter needs a pedal harp. Say no more.

  8. SOLD: CJ Dixon B Chanter in cocobolo with 2 keys. The chanter was made by CJ Dixon in 2008 from cocobolo with blackwood mounts and brass metalwork. It has a lovely warm, rich tone. I've owned it for over a year and I've very much enjoyed playing it. I'm selling to fund another project. Last April, I sent it to CJ to change the headpiece for the "Swan Neck" design, which I find both more comfortable and better looking. CJ also added the Cnat and Fnat keys. It comes with the original reed (I changed the bridle) as well as one that I made. No issues: the chanter is in excellent condition.
If interested, I could add a bag and bellows, at additional cost, to make this into a practice set.

  10. SOLD: Seth Gallagher ¾ C Set This set was made for me this year by Seth with nickel silver and imitation ivory. The chanter (which, frankly, I'd Really like to keep) is one of the best I've ever played. Even Seth......(his own severest critic) didn't want to give it up. Wooden top with three keys (Stop,C&F). The set is in perfect nick, though the buyer will need to supply her or his own bellows as I'm keeping my Dow. Price with chanter $7500. If you're interested in the set sans chanter, please drop me a line and we'll discuss. I really love playing this set (the drones with the cane reeds are lovely), but I need to raise cash and my concert pitch set keeps me in the gig market, so..... Here is an opportunity to obtain a top class flat along with something else heretofore unheard of in the piping world..... Instant Gratification! Thank you for looking and please contact me with any questions. I will respond promptly.

  11. SOLD: David Stephenson D Chanter - It is in new - unused condition. I ordered it two years ago, expecting it in one year. During that wait, I had hand surgery that went bad. I lost any ability to play that I had, and see no sign of regaining the hand dexterity. I just recieved the pipe in January 2010. It has one key plus two extra blocks. The wood is holly. It has one new-unused reed sent with the pipe. Shipping is $20 in the USA, 20 pounds in the UK. Sorry, I can't give an audio sample. I can not grasp the pipe.

  15. SOLD: Tadhg Crowley ¾ D Set - 3/4 set in D made in the 1930s by Tadhg Crowley of Cork with additional fully keyed concert pitch chanter made by Cillian O Briain.
Having recently acquired a full set in D by Geoff Wooff, the time has come to reluctantly part with this set, which I have been playing continually for the past 10 years. The set and both chanters were completely re-reeded by Allan Moller in 2009, and sound and play wonderfully.
This is one of the earliest Crowley sets of the several I have seen. It was originally owned by John Duibhir of Ardara, Co. Donegal. After his death in the 1980s they came into the possession of a local publican in town, from whom I bought the set in 2000 while I was living nearby in north Sligo.
The set is made of fruitwood, stained black to appear as blackwood. The metalwork is brass (handforged keys and hand rolled ferrules) and the mounts are catalin (a type of artificial ivory that turns to orange over the years, common on Crowley sets and those of some other earlier makers).
There have been some repairs carried out on the set over the decades, although it remains almost all original. The bottom half of the tenor drone is a replacement, made of blackwood in a style to match the rest of the set. But for this single piece, all the other wooden parts are original, and all are stamped with the maker’s mark, ‘T. Crowley, Cork’.
The mount on the baritone drone is a replacement, made of false ivory and stained to match the originals. It has been cracked and re-glued at some point in time but is otherwise solid. One of the regulator mounts is also cracked, but airtight. A touch of super glue should further solidify it if desired, although I myself have never bothered as it does not affect the playing. Neither crack is noticeable except on close inspection. The mount on the tenor drone although different in colour than the others is original. I have seen other Crowley sets of similar vintage with this identical white tenor drone mount.
I had a new drone shut-off switch installed by Andy Faden of Bedford, UK in 2009, and the set has an L&M bag that I had put on it several years ago.
The original Crowley chanter (as is the case with all Crowley chanters I have ever seen) plays sharp of modern concert pitch (closer to D sharp). It is a sweet sounding chanter nonetheless with a wooden top and one high C key. Both the chanter and top bear the Crowley maker’s mark.
The O Briain chanter I acquired from a friend around 1995, who bought it directly from Cillian during a visit to Dingle some years before that. It has 5 handforged brass keys, a brass top and scalloped toneholes. Last time I ran into Cillian a few years back he thought it was probably made around 1988. It is a one-of-a-kind prototype. It is a strong and resonant chanter that has been my main chanter for 15 years, used for gigging and recording.
The drones and regs are set up to play in modern concert D along with the O Briain chanter. I carry the entire set in a padded tenor saxophone case, which is included with the sale.
The entire set is in tune and beautifully balanced. I play it out at sessions every week, so it is well maintained. This is a unique opportunity to acquire a lovely vintage set of pipes that will be playing for you straight out of the box, as well as a one-of-a-kind chanter by one of today’s top makers.
The set comes with a Michael Dow bellows.
Asking price, €10,000 ono. Reduced: to UK£6500. The pipes are in London. The buyer will be responsible for shipping and insurance costs.

  16. SOLD: Brad Angus D Full Set This set was bought in 1999 and I've recently had the chanter and drones reeded and the set made airtight. Reeds are working here in CO at altitude, dry climate. The set is made of blackwood and brass. The regulators need some work on the reeds, but overall the set plays well, particularly the chanter. As far as condition, the bellows are functional, but not as comfortable as some sets I've played. The case is a quite simple plywood box. The stock is tied up rather high on a large bag, making the regulators a bit difficult to reach, but this could be remedied by tying into a new bag. I'm selling the set because musical interests have changed and it doesn't make sense to have a set of pipes unplayed in the house. Overall, it's a beautiful set, perhaps one of Brad's earlier works, but nice nonetheless.

  17. SOLD: Coyne Full Set in C
Alas, who knew that college tuition would become so expensive? Due to such things in general, the time has come to send the old Coyne set on its way.

I have had this set for many years and have played it on and off the whole time. It was originally brought over from Ireland by a priest who first went to the Northwest, where the set sat for a while in a violin shop display case, and then came to the Bay Area when the fellow was transferred here. The set wound up with a well-known family of Bay Area Irish musicians, who eventually determined that despite pipers in the family, none took to the Uilleann pipes. The set wound up with me.

A recent comparison with another Coyne set performed by our own Michael Hubbert, pretty well confirms that the drones and at least the tenor regulator are certainly Coyne. The baritone regulator is stamped W. Rousome, so not too much mystery there. The bass, well, no stamps or indications that Coyne did or did not make it.

The main stock is hollow and as can be seen from the photos, was, I think, at one time, left handed. It was changed over somewhere in the murky past.

The chanter top was made by myself to replace a completely un-original lump of brass tubing, and perhaps the ferrule under the chanter top mount as well. Other than that, it is as I got it.

The chanter has a decent reed in it, and plays pretty well, but not particularly easily, and the drones are reeded, but a mysterious air escape makes the set hard for me to drive with the drones on. I'm sure that with a little investigation the cause could be tracked down and rectified. The regulator reeds have, typically, over the years, been given to desperate pipers and never replaced.

Once again, the set is historic and lovely, and deserves to be restored and played. Unfortunately, I don't have the time or energy to devote to it, and higher education demands payment. I hope a suitable home for them can be found.

They live in an old case, and the drone stop valve is a coin dated 1850.

  28. SOLD: Hughes & McLeod Practice Set - I'm selling a Hughes and McLeod practice set in concert D, made in Co. Down, Northern Ireland. Please see my eBay listing at: EBAY This set was made some time in the 1990s, I believe. All parts of the set are in good, playable condition, showing normal cosmetic wear. Great tone, and plays easily and in tune across both octaves. This is an ideal set for a beginner or advancing piper who wants an authentic, serious instrument, not a cheap and frustrating knockoff made in Pakistan. The chanter is turned of blackwood, with brass fittings, brass head joint, and faux ivory trim rings. Stamped “HUGHES & McLEOD. DOWNPATRICK” - The one brass key on the chanter, the long C-natural, is block-mounted. The reed is brand new, custom-made and voiced by pipemaker Brad Angus. Bag is cowhide, covered with burgundy velvet, trimmed in gold fringe. Fittings are of turned blackwood and brass. The bag seems to be airtight, with no leaks. The bellows is stoutly made of heavy black cowhide. I was told it was actually made by the late Dave Williams, but there are no markings to confirm this. Bellows also seems to be airtight. Price: Opening bid is US$675.00, plus $25 for shipping via USPS. Additional photos are available. Feel free to email questions to me at markwmorris@hotmail.com

  29. SOLD: Kirk Lynch D Chanter - Up for sale is a brand new concert D chanter crafted by the great Kirk Lynch. It is crafted from ebony wood with beautiful boxwood mounts. Also has a brass reed cap with old-style swan neck attachment and two keys for G# and Fnat. The tone of the chanter is dark and earthy with strong volume. The playing pressure and volume can be adjusted based on how you set up the reed.
The chanter is about two months old and is essentially un-played. I am selling it because I have another D chanter now that matches my half set and need to liquidate extras to fund a C chanter and regulators. The chanter comes with two reeds from Kirk, both voiced for a warm tone. Kirk’s pipes are in high demand—this is a great opportunity to get a professional chanter without the two year wait!
*** This would be a great addition to the chanter-less Lynch half set also listed here from Zac Leger.

  30. SOLD: Mahogany Pipes Case - I'm selling a gorgeous pipe case from Tim Britton. It is about a year old and is made of lovely dovetailed mahogany and is lined with 1/4" foam covered in black velvet. The condition is good, but has some scuffing on the exterior and a few punctures in the foam--just minor cosmetic stuff. The case came with a set of pipes I recently purchased, however, I've decided to stick with my old case. It's sturdy and beautiful, but I just don't need two cases. It will hold up to a full concert set with some extra room for a whistle or two. The interior dimensions are: 28" x 10" x 4"
These cases are $140 new. I am asking $100. Sorry, I don't have an audio sample of the case : ) I also have an extra blowpipe tenon in rosewood with leather valve and a couple pieces of blowpipe material if anyone needs it. The OD of the tenon is about 9/16", but could be beefed up with more hemp if needed. One blowpipe piece is 8", the other is about 5.25". There is a leather sleeve for the smaller one. See pics.

  33. SOLD: Wilkinson-McCarthey Full D Set - I've decided to part with this set. Although I have not had them long, they are a good sounding and playing set. The set was built in London around 1975. It is in great condition and has just recently been tuned up- regulators and drones have been fitted with synthetic reeds made by Childress: Drones: 3 drones featuring a shuttle-type baritone drone- the turns in the pipe are internal, making for a more compact and elegant looking set. Regulators: 3 regulators with straight-type baritone. Chanter: The reed cap with stop key is original to the set, but the chanter has been remade by Childress. Apparently an original ODowd chanter was so badly modified at some point that it was unrepairable. Childress used the original specs, keys and mountings and created a chanter to fit, making it unique. The entire set is blackwood, with brass and mounted in real ivory. What type of ivory I'm not exactly sure: the very apparent schreger lines are greater than 90 degrees but less than 115. However, judging by the pattern and density of the lines- I would say its real elephant ivory. But because the set was manufactured around 1975, it is legal for export and sale since that is well before the 1989 ivory ban. Bellows are air tight and have a comfortable suede pad and long waist strap. I have higher resolution pics I can send upon request. Asking $5,000

  34. SOLD: Kirk Lynch D ½ Set - No Chanter - Great condition. Half set made by Kirk Lynch in 1991, sans chanter. Main stock is walnut with ebony drones. All metal parts are brass. It has served me well over the ten years I have had it. I won a gold medal in the 2003 Mid-Atlantic Fleadh here in the states and took a third in the All-Ireland senior piping competition with it the same year. I play trad music professionally and have used this set on stage and on tour with the likes of Eileen Ivers, Celtic Crossroads, Glen Road, Jamie Laval, Niamh Parsons, John Doyle, the Irish dance show Emerald Beat and on over a dozen recordings. However, I have a new full set coming very soon, so I must sadly part with my old friend in order to procure funds. This set has just been completely refurbished and cleaned up by master wooden flute maker and instrument restorer Jon C. All metal ferrules and parts have been thoroughly cleaned and polished, re-corked and many of the wooden parts rebuffed and refinished. A new blowpipe of very durable, thick black rubber was added which should last for many years. The bellows valve was replaced and completely new, very comfortable arm and waist pads covered with real black leather have been added to the bellows as well. There is no longer a leather flapper valve in the bag at the base of the blowpipe. Instead I use a garden-hose quick-connect system to attach the bellows and blowpipes together, with a LittleMac highland pipe valve fitted into the male piece of the quick-connect. This makes the set very easy to take apart and connect and very efficient with no need to replace leather valves in the set (no annoying "groaning" noises from settling valves, either). The drones use Kirk's brass and plastic composite reeds and they sound great. I never used the baritone drone as I don't really care for the sound of all three drones going, but I will include all three reeds with the set. A few nicks and dings here and there, but I have had it for ten years and it is in as good of shape as ever.

  36. SOLD: Michael Vignoles Practice Set - Beautiful Irish Uilleann Pipes Practice Set made for me by Michael Vignoles in Galway Ireland. The chanter was custom ordered in Blackwood and fully keyed for chromatic playing in all scales. In addition, it has a stop key on the chanter top and Nickel Silver works to give it lasting beauty to the eye as well as the ear. The buyer of this set will also get a copy of H.J. Clark's Uilleann Piping book and a second, new reed made by Mr. Vignoles and matched to the chanter. I am letting this go only because my time has become more limited and I've had to narrow my interests a bit. I still play Sax, Clarinet, and Hurdy, but just don't have the time to devote to this beautiful instrument. Mr Vignoles's pipes can be heard on Youtube. I've attached a link for one of his practice sets playing the theme from Titanic. Absolutely mesmerizing! I'm listing it at $1299.00 - It cost me 1500.00 last year.

  37. SOLD: Joe Kennedy C Chanter - It is about three years old and made of ebony, with brass and boxwood mounts. Also, it has a C and F key as well and comes with two reeds made by Joe. It is in overall great conditon and there are no issues playability wise. When I bought this chanter from Joe he informed me there was a small crack on the boxwood mount at the bottom (see pic) that he would replace for free. Since I was planning on completing this chanter with drones and regs, I just kept it. Anyway, I can have him replace it before sending this chanter to a buyer. Also, the buyer of this chanter can also have my place on his queue (about 1 1/2 to 2 years to go- his current wait I believe is about 6 yrs. now). I got great compliments from Mickey Dunne and others who tried it, so it's truly nice opurtunity for someone to immediately acquire a high specification & totaly nice stick from world known and appreciated maker. I'm asking the price which Andreas currently charges, but on offer here without long wait. I am forced to sell this chanter Urgently, becouse of hard recent economic problems. 41. SOLD: B.C. Childress D Full Set - Full set of Childress uilleann pipes, concert pitch, made in 1999. They have been nothing short of a workhorse. They have a Taylor style folded bass regulator, wood faced bass drone puck, deluxe mounts and ferrules - blackwood with stag antler and brass.
Everything functioning and buzzing along. Drones have B.C.'s synthetic reeds - all going very consistently with no problems at all. Chanter playing nicely also. Back around 2000 Tim Britton did some bending on the keys to make them more ergonomic but other than that they are as they came 10 years ago.
Set has the usual wear and tear - one fixed reg mount on tenor (glued and pinned by BC back probably 5 years ago - but not noticeable and never cracked again... cracked the first time by the key getting snagged in my sleeve - DOH!) but nothing really major. In fact, that may have been one of the two only times the set needed servicing by B.C. - and it is played in sessions, in rehearsals, or on stage constantly so it most definitely has many rewarding hours under its belt.

  45. SOLD: Leo Rowsome Full Set in D
Sadly, the time has come to send th' old Rowsomes on their next journey. I have owned this set for probably fifteen years, having bought the set from the niece of Pat O'Neill. I played it often and always could feel the connections. When working, the set had the most beautiful tone and feel. The set is not currently reeded up, as the reeds have been given away, one by one, to desperate pipers.

The set plays most comfortably, with the reeds that were in it, a little sharp of D, but several other reed makers have assured me that it could be brought down. I never got into it that far.

The set was owned by Pat O'Neill, who was a very influential musician in San Francisco, and was bought from Leo Rowsome to replace his O'Meally set. His niece believes that it was sometime in the 1950's. Ted Anderson relates that Pat told him that it was a set that Leo had been playing himself for quite a while, and Pat bought it used to avoid the delay of having a new set made. Possibly the set is from the 40's sometime. In construction, I believe it is very similar to the set played by Liam O'Flynn.

There is a new bag on it, and all the pieces are original with the exception of the ivory ring closest to the cup, which was fragmented and missing pieces, that piece is faux ivory, as I was fresh out of tusk. I believe that the bag cover is the one supplied by Rowsome, as is the case.

There are some ancient repairs that would be nice to have redone, but I never got around to doing them.

This is a historic and beautiful set, and it deserves to be restored and played.

Pat O'neill's niece sold the set to me to provide college tuition for her son, and we agreed that it is only fitting that I have to sell it for the same reason.

Pat was one of the very few pipers who continued playing on the west coast, and he influenced and encouraged many musicians, Denis Brooks among them.

    Additional high-resolution photos are available.

  46. SOLD: Pedersen D ½ Set - I am selling a half-set built by John Pedersen of San Anselmo, CA in 1997, and masterfully modified by Tim Britton in 2001. The chanter and drones are made of ebony, with some very nice figuring on the chanter visible in the photos below. The chanter features C natural, F natural, and G sharp keys. The bellows and main stock are made of cherry. The bellows feature a beautiful Irish entwined serpent relief carving. The set is airtight with very smooth and quiet operation. I am selling the pipes because they are not my primary instrument and I no longer have sufficient time to devote to practicing them. They are in perfect working condition and have never had any problems other than normal reed problems associated with fluctuations in humidity. I am not a professional piper, but I have used the set for several professional recordings (two of them on Word Records) as well as for live performances at festivals, variety shows, and informal pub sessions. The demo sound sample here features this set and was recorded direct to digital with no editing or other post-production enhancements. The pipes enter at 1:33.
In 2001 I had Tim Britton modify the pipes. Tim re-positioned the back D hole (see detail in photo). He did not use filler material to do this, but precisely filled in the old hole with another piece of ebony and then re-drilled. He also adjusted the taper of the bore within the chanter itself, modified the keys of the chanter to enhance ease of use, and made new reeds for the chanter and drones. Needless to say I was very pleased with Tim’s work.
I have never been much of a reedsmith, so I have pretty much stuck with the chanter reed Tim made for me. It is quite stable within normal humidity range, but the back D gets a little weak if it gets too dry. I have not played a ton of different pipe sets, but of all that I have played this one is by far the finest.

  48. SOLD: Neil O'Grady D Chanter - For sale a Neil O'Grady concert chanter in cocobolo, maple mounts, and brass. It has 3 keys: C natural, Bb, and F natural. I bought this chanter about 6 months ago. It came with no reed. I reeded it myself. I personally play a Neil O'Grady full set and make my own chanter reeds, so I knew when I bought it that I could probably reed it.
While I like the sound of Neil's chanters (with the right reed in it), I don't like his extra large mounts. So I personally ground and sanded by hand the mounts in order to make it look more ascetically normal. Also, Neil makes his chanters with a large thumb rest. I ground and sanded down the thumb rest as well, making the grip like any other normal Uilleann chanter. (I did all this to my own chanter years ago). Please see the pictures below of what this chanter now looks like.
The chanter is well in tune and has good tone. The back D hole was enlarged a bit by Bruce Childress this past August at the Piper's Gathering in Vermont. It has helped to stabilize the back D note very well. However, other than the cosmetic work and Bruce opening the back D, there has been no other alterations.
The reed is very stable, and has been for the past 4 months since I made it (hard D, solid back D, and even the third octave D). The chanter sings and is fun to play. Please check out the sound clips. The first sound file is of Tim Benson playing the chanter back in August at the Piper's Gathering in Vermont ( 55% humidity and higher). (Thanks Tim!). It was recorded in a room with a lot of echo. The second file is of myself playing the chanter a few days ago here in California (30% humidity). Both sound files are rough, on the spot, recordings made with a little Sansa Clip MP3 player.
I bought the chanter 6 months ago with the idea of reeding it and selling it, but am only getting around to selling it now because it played so well. For a while, I thought about keeping it but finally decided I don't need two Neil O'Grady chanters.
I am more than willing to to do Paypal or take a cashier's check/money order. I will ship anywhere in the world - buyer to pay shipping.

  49. SOLD: Geoff Wooff Full Set in D - (includes C chanter) - These pipes were made for me by Geoff Wooff in African Blackwood, Ivory and brass when he was living at Port Fairy Australia in 1981. The pipes have not been played in recent years as I was leaving them for my retirement but with the kids at College and an interest in violin making its time to pass this set on to someone who will do them justice.
I have communicated with Geoff and he indicated that the drones and the regulators are pretty much the the same as he makes today however Geoff has made some great inroads with the narrow bore chanter developing a sweeter sounding chanter. A new reed will have to be acquired for the chanter, my reed making skills are lacking with suitable cane at the moment. The chanter has 3 keys and has a strong sound and would be ideal for session playing. Also included is a C chanter with one key and provision for another 2 keys. This C chanter could be sold separately if required.
The pipes would benefit from a service as they have not seen the light of day for 20 years. The set still appears to be airtight and the drones are working perfectally. The regulators will need some work, one of the key springs has broken and some reeds will need to be replaced. One of the ivory drone ferrules has some chipping around the edge as shown in the photo, this is minor.
This is a chance to acquire a set from a very sought after maker, I am offering the pipes to help finance my son's education and to pursue my interest in violin making.

  50. SOLD: Joe Kennedy Bellows & pipe bag for sale. Tim Benson Chanter top with stop key for sale.
Bellows made in 2000. Re-leathered in March and are playing very well. I added new belts, hip and elbow cochins. These bellows are small, but sturdy and air tight. Ideal for a smaller player.
Bag was received in March. It is a small bag, but feels comfortable and plays very well. The main stock has already been cut and is more suited for a player who likes to have their pipes lower like Emmitt Gill or Jerry O'Sullivan. The neck has been cut back to 6 inches so a swan neck chanter top would be the best for regulator playing. If you don't play regulators then this doesn't matter.

  51. SOLD: Hunter D Palosanto Chanter - This Hunter Palosanto Concert D (no keys) is a great playing instrument. It has been around the world /exposed to many different kinds of climates (UK, Ireland, California, St. Louis, Miami, and back again to the UK) and has held up very well.
Sam Lawrence of Hunter Pipes (UK) has it in his possession as of now. He has inspected the chanter thoroughly. It is in great playing condition, and ready for sale.
As one can hear from the tone and it's performance, there is no wonder why these instruments do not come up for sale more often.

  52. SOLD: Benson Practice Set - This is a starter set from Tim and Stephanie Benson (Cornelius and Benson) with Mexican cocobolo starter chanter with brass top and ferrule.
Condition: It is pretty much brand new. I tried playing them a few times. Really, all that needs done to make them in the condition in which I purchased them is a little polishing of the brass. I bought these about a year and a half ago.
Any issues: I don't know of any issues, but I have never really played them.
Materials the item is made from - please see above for the chanter. I am not sure what the bellows are made of, but they were purchased from Cornelius and Benson, so I am guessing that they are their standard starter set materials as noted on their website.
Reason for sale: I honestly never got around to learning to play these. I started with Irish fiddle and pipes at the same time. I really became interested in the fiddle and have decided to devote my time to that rather than to the pipes. I would like someone to get some good use out of these as I do think they are quite nice and well made.
A reed is included. It is the same one that was fitted for these by the maker. I paid 950.00 for these, but am asking $675.00. I will most likely send these via USPS and will include insurance, delivery confirmation and signing upon delivery. I will pay the shipping and handling, but I can only send to the US (excluding Hawaii and Alaska). If you choose to buy this an are living internationally, you will have to pay actual shipping and handling costs aong with any other associated fees.
This is basically the "starter set" seen on bensonandcorneliuspipes.com Feel free to ask any questions and I will try to answer them as best I can.

  54. SOLD: Seth Gallagher D ½ Set - I am finally getting around to putting up for sale my 1/2 set in D made by Seth Gallagher. They are ebony with brass and "ivory" fittings, no keys but blocked to accept them at a later point. The chanter was purchased in 1998 and the drones two years later. I have not polished the brass, so they have the patina of an old set of pipes. Otherwise they are in excellent condition and all the reeds are working (but the bass drone reed needs some tweaking). I am selling them because I have decided to concentrate on my flute playing and the funds will be used to travel to Ireland. Seth has a current waiting time of 2.5 years and a new 1/2 set will cost 4975 without the case. I am asking $3500 and that includes the case. Buyer pays for shipping and insurance. I am willing to travel up to 150 miles from central Connecticut if a serious buyer wants to try the pipes first.

  60. SOLD: Coyne B Set in Boxwood - Considering selling a Coyne set in boxwood/brass/ivory that was left following the passing of a friend, now it's for sale. I am told the set is circa 1800 to 1840.
The set was garnered in pieces from Matt Kiernan, many years ago and was not in running order. The set was refurbished by Geoff Woof quite a few years ago. As the bass reg was missing Mr. Wooff made a new one. Additionally he made a new mainstock. the set is pitched 25 cents sharp of B. The chanter has over the last couple hundred years or so been mucked about with. Mr. Wooff, re-lined the chanter holes, now the chanter is very sweet and plays very well. The instrument has a soft tone, very typical of a flat set and i'm not too happy to part with it, but fiscal responsibilities require action i'm afraid.
Comes with case, old wooden box, chanter cover, all reeds as well as a Michael Burke B (+25 cents) whislte. No bellows! Set's fully going. Would prefer it be played.
Included is a sound sample. Forgive my meager playing, The Four Courts of Dublin into The Beauty Spot, as taught to me by Tomas Standeven. i also somewhat brutally try and run up the scale at the end. I don't play this chanter on a regular basis, so the fingering's a bit dodgey, it's a great sounding chanter imo, certainly could be tweaked and rushed by someone who knows what they are doing.
Some history on the set: I only know what I've been told! I recieved the instrument as part of Standeven's estate. As one of his last students he left me this set as well as his flute, which I cherish, which was picked out for him by Eddie Cahill. The flute's not for sale, not worth much and I treasure it more than the set in question. "At any rate", Standeven got the parts from Matt Keirnan in the 60's as he described, he eventually sent it off to Geoff Wooff who was, as I was told, in Australia at the time, probably the 1970's. Whereupon he restored them and added the bass reg as it had gone missing, somewhere along the line. He certainly replaced some of the ivory mounts, though some of the originals, to my mind remain. I'll post shots of all the parts in a few days, am taking the set to the Pipers Gathering, in Vermont if anyone's around. Hope to have Benedict Kohler, fine tune them.

  61. SOLD: Martin Preshaw D Practice Set - with C Nat. key. Ebony with brass and boxwood mounts. Not sure who made the reeds - I have two of them, one rather mellow, the other louder, bolder. 62. SOLD: David Boisvert C ½ Set - Purchased used with some updates and normal maintenance performed by the maker prior to delivery. The set is made from Curly Lemonwood aka Castella Boxwood, with brass ferrules and imitation ivory mounts. The chanter is keyless but has blocks. There is a 4th "A" drone w/ a stopper. The mainstock is hollow and the drone reeds are composite with brass bodies and cane tongues. There are two chanter reeds and a hardshell case. The set includes the original bellows as well as a set by CJ Dixon. The photos of course show the brass patina but I can polish that if the buyer wishes. The set has been well-kept with only a small amount of thread added to the tenons over the cold winter. This is a sweet sounding, well-balanced flat set with the classic maker look and tone. Price: $2500, buyer to pay shipping and insurance.
This is a great set but I've decided that I'd like to go down in pitch to a B set.

  64. SOLD: Bruce Childress D Practice Set Concert D chanter made by Bruce Childress with three keys and a stop key. Newish L&M bag with stocks by Seth Gallagher. Bellows made by Brad Angus. Tutorial book by Heather Clarke.
Condition: Chanter is in excellent condition. It does have a small, microcrack in the very thin wood at the bottom of the chanter. It has had a thin film of epoxy applied and is not changing/moving/growing. This very small crack does not affect the functioning of the chanter at all. The bag/stocks are fairly new. The blowpipe stock is turning in the bag, but I cannot detect any significant leak there. I can retie it if preferred, but the bag is fully functional as is. The bellows are in fair condition. The intake valve has a repaired crack and is functioning well. The bellows are leaky, but provide more than enough power for this practice set.
    Any issues: see above.
Materials: Chanter is cocobollo with boxwood mounts and brass.
Reason for sale: I have too many sets/chanters...
Will accept Paypal or other certified funds. Check Bruce's website for the cost of this chanter new. A new bag with stocks from Seth is $200 plus shipping. I am including the bellows as a throw in, although they are fully functional.

  65. SOLD: Andreas Rogge B Full Set - I'm a french uilleann piper owning two sets of pipes (D set and B set) but not having time enough to play both. So I sell my B full set made by Andreas Rogge. This set was bought in 2004 in Tübingen (Germany). It's made of ebony (african) : chanter, drones and regulators. Only the main stock seems made in a hard synthetical black material (delrin - ed.). As I asked Daniel Hervé (The french man who knows all bout the pipes and who, with Alain Froment, prevented it to disapear in the late 70ies), he didn't know exactly which material it was but told that it was particulary solid and really good for a mainstock because it would never crack.
The chanter is fully-keyed: stop-key and four keys for the whole scale. So as you play in the scale of B (B, C#, D#, E, F#, G#, A#, B), you also have D, F, G and the 2nd octave A, with the 4 keys.
You can see and hear me on myspace with these links: (Please be indulgent: my drones weren't tuned. Well,if you're interested I'll try to make other videos or mp3) Now, to be complete, I have to mention 2 little things:
    • The tenor regulator is rather dark brown than black whilst others pieces are black.
    • On this reg, the sharpest note/key make a weak sound ; I suppose something's wrong with te reed which had to be mended or changed.
I never tried to learn playing regulators seriously so they're probably not in tune but I can try to tune them.
Anyway, this set sounds beautifull. I'm quite sad to sell it because I love the sound of a B set, so deep and almost mysterious... but as I wrote it above, I've got no time because I play on my D set too and also play guitar... and I need money.
I ask 7700 7200 euros (€) for this set, shipping and insurance included. I would send it in a flight case made for D set (so the bass reg would be apart in the case) and this would be in a another box, so to prevent from any shock.
I think it's a good price : actually, it's less than the price asked today by A. Rogge for a basic B full set + keys 5 (€7306)... but he can't precise any delay (when I bought it, I had been told 2 years and waited more than 3 !) and A. Rogge asks you for 20 % deposit : so your set is in fact more expensive than the written price, because you lend your money.

  70. SOLD: Seth Gallagher D Practice Set Seth Gallagher D Practice Set with Michael Dow Bellows. D concert chanter with 4 keys & wooden top. The original owner of the chanter (K. 74. SOLD: Alan Ginsberg D Full Set - Full set in ‘D’ made by Alan Ginsberg of Wales. Made in African blackwood, brass, and imitation ivory. Fully keyed chanter (F, G#, Bb & C key), L&M leather bag and hard case included. Fully reeded with brand-new chanter reed, three cane drone reeds and three polystyrene regulator reeds. The chanter and drones are set up nicely but the regulator reeds may need some adjustment. The original owner stated that the chanter was made in the mid 1990's, the drones were made in 1998/99, and the regulators were added a year or two after that (myself being the second owner).

This set sounds great and is in good condition but does have some minor nicks and dings. The bass drone slide cracked but has been repaired with epoxy and has not given me any problems since. The imitation ivory mount on the baritone drone has been cracked and repaired with epoxy as well. The bellows have some staple and screw holes in the wood from a previous cushion but are in good working order. These issues are mostly cosmetic and do not effect the playability of the set. Please see photos for details and feel free to ask me any questions.

The reason why I am parting with this set is because I have recently purchased another full set which I consider to be somewhat of an upgrade, albeit there is nothing wrong with the Ginsberg set for the price. I would love to keep both sets for many reasons, but I’d rather save up for a flat pitch set than have two concert pitch sets!

It is ebony with ivoreen, brass top, C key, blocks for mounting additional keys, and comes with the original Pat Sky reed plus a reed of my own make. The chanter's tone is quite a bright, resonant and loud. The chanter plays better in my high, dry climate with a reed I made here. Sky's original reed has a raspy/weakish back D but may behave better in a more humid climate. Note in the photos; the brass insert in the E hole was done by the maker during manufacture. I am selling to fund a flat pitch chanter. I am asking $650 but will consider any reasonable offer.

  80. REMOVED: Andreas Rogge D Practice Set - ANDREAS ROGGE NEW D chanter with Bag & Bellows Beauthifull NEW D chanter with Bag&Bellows and … Chanter is Plumwood with Boxwood mounts and brass metal parts. Fully keyed chanter ( F, G#, Bb & C key) with wooden top. An opportunity to immediately acquire a high specification chanter from a top maker. The price I'm asking is what Andreas currently charges for this description but on offer here without the waiting time. Exchange for Highest Quality B chanter also possible. On pictures you can see also flightcase, bag with stocks and black velvet cover together with bellows. Flightcase is a wery good price plastic case one - suply of Andreas Rogge. The bellows are custom made by Scottish Small pipe maker Robin Beck. They are made of state-of-the-art modern materials like special nypren ect. So there is no unreliable materials and they don't need seasoning ect. And the bag is of high quality manmade material, made by Ross (Australia); the one that Andreas offer besides his usual bags. Andreas made stocks for bag. This bag also don't need any seasoning. Both are perfectly 100 % airtight. Also included Black velvet cover and reedmaking kit. I will happily answer additional questions.
Audio sample: I am total begginer so I can't record anything. Rogge chanters are known to have great sound, tuning and very responsive reeds. And also Andreas said to me that he will do all his best, so there is no need to talk anything. You can hear sound of Andreass Rogge D chanters on his website, or on numerous records and on You Tube. Many wery good pipers play this chanter design.
Reason of selling: The main reason is that I am forced to have much quieter flat chanter for my delicate situation. And now I also had quite big right hand ring finger injure at my work few days ago and I am not even 100 % sure what will be, until doctors tell me after recover.
Post: No problem to post chanter anywhere, but you will have to pay insured postage.

  82. SOLD: D Half Set - Set consists of:
    1. Bruce Childress Concert D Chanter with reed
    Blackwood chanter made in 2001
    Brass Windcap
    Scalloped tone holes
Cnat key, Fnat key, and chanter stop key.
    2. Ray Sloan Concert D Chanter with reed
African blackwood with nickel/silver and imitation ivory mounts.
    3. John Pedersen Drones
Main stock has a brass on-off drone switch, with tenor, baritone, and base drones. The main stock (which I think is teak) has the Pederson style of pipe bag attachment with a lock washer system. These drones are nicely trimmed in brass and so called "tortoise shell" a synthetic plastic that John uses. Everything is in good working condition. There is a small ding in the end of the base drone brass tubing but it doesn't affect the drone at all.

  83. SOLD: Seth Gallagher D Chanter - Seth Gallagher Concert D chanter. 4 Keys and Wooden top. As a professional musician and studio musician, I worked with Seth to tweak this chanter so it can to play perfectly in tune, yet retain all the vibe and tone that is associated with a vintage instrument. When Seth made this instrument he really out did himself, as I have yet to hear a Gallagher concert chanter that sounds better than this one! The holes are lightly champhered (but not overly so) and there are few chanters that feel as comfortable in the hands as this one does. The reed included plays nice and light, facilitating difficult passages. $1,775.00. Buyer pays shipping and insurance.

  85. SOLD: Seth Gallagher D Full Set - In ebony, brass and faux ivory. Chanter has one key, but has blocks for additional keys. I purchased this as a half set in June 2001, and had the regulators fitted in November, 2008. Pipes have always been stored in a humidified room in the winter, no A/C in the summer. Cane drone reeds, bronze regulator reeds. Taylor wrap around style bass regulator. Comes with a hard case.
When Seth was fitting the regulators, he also put in a new chanter reed. The leather on the bellows was defective and so it was replaced as well. Basically he checked everything out and got the pipes 'tuned up' and ready to go. I've not mucked with any of the reeds since I got the pipes back.
They are in exceptional condition overall, showing very limited wear. Some tarnishing to the brass, one minor scratch on the bottom of the common stock. The wood on the bellows has some dents and marks from where Seth replaced the leather or the buckle has hit it. That's about it.
I'm selling because I realize that as much as I've been meaning to, I'm not giving this instrument the commitment it takes. It's time to let them go to someone who will play and enjoy them.
Seth's waiting list is now up to 2 and a half years (probably much longer for full sets), and the cost would be at least $9,500US. I'm offering this gently used set for $7,400US. This is a great opportunity for the serious piper.
Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions. Buyer will pay only actual shipping and insurance charges.

  87. SOLD: Brad Angus B full set - in ebony and nickel-silver with boxwood mounts. The chanter has a very comfortable stretch and an expressive tone. The drones have Childress composite reeds and are very stable with a nice buzz. The bag is a new L&M. It’s a lovely looking set and the only reason I’m selling is that I can’t get on with the bass bar – I’m used to a wrap-around – so they just don’t get played enough. 90. SOLD: Alan Ginsberg 'D' Full Set - This is a full set in 'D' made by Alan Ginsberg of Caernafon, Wales, thought of by many as one of the best pipe-makers in the world. The set is blackwood with brass keys and fittings and alternative ivory ferrules and finals. The D chanter has four keys. I purchased this set from Mr. Ginsberg two years ago and never really had time to learn to play. Consequently this set is essentially new. As it happened at the time, I made several inquiries about purchasing pipes from makers and though usually there is a one year plus waiting time from ordering, I was told that this set was coming out of the shop in about two weeks and the person who had ordered them backed out. The one unusual feature of this set is that it came with an artificial bag (that's the way it had been ordered, so that's what I got) which is completely airtight and doesn't require any sort of curing or care, but the purests amoung you would probably want to replace that with a traditional bag that I'm sure can be obtained from Mr. Ginsberg

Financial difficulties force the sale of this fine set before I had a chance to play them. As I said, this is essentially a new set only played twice and is in need of a good home. Along with the set of pipes I include a spool of hemp, a cake of beeswax, a leather square for stopping the chanter on your thigh, a copy of "The new approach to Uillean Piping" by H.J. Clarke and a hard-shell case (formerly a generic tenor sax case in which the set travels quite nicely). The current price for such a set (and of course there would be that waiting period) is £3,700 GBP or about $6,500 U.S.

Original Gallagher Reed, very stable, amazing sound, powerful hard D and easy to play in both octaves. The Bellows are very comfortable and air tight. Leather Bag by L&M with dark green velvet cover. 99. SOLD: Brendan O'Hare D Chanter - This is a Brendan O'Hare (Belfast) D chanter in African Blackwood and Brass with imitation ivory, wooden chanter top, full mounts but no keys. This chanter was made for myself around 1992, is in very good condition and playing very well, nice crisp tone, not too loud but can hold its own in a session. Brendan (who learnt his pipe making skills wIth Robbie Hughes) was at one time the supplier of sets (as recommended by the then and present tutor Tom Carke) to students at the Crescent Arts Centre Uilleann Pipe Club Belfast. Unfortunately Brendan is no longer making pipes due to RSI and his chanters dont come up for sale very often, so a rare opportunity to acquire a high quality chanter from a top maker. I'm selling the chanter (i have two other chanters that have keys) to help pay towards regulators. 102. SOLD: Seth Gallagher D ½ Set - In Ebony, Brass and artificial ivory. The chanter (#245) includes Fnat, G# and Cnat keys and a wooden wind cap. The set was completed in the fall of 2004 and has been played at least 2-3 times a week over the past four years. In other words, the reeds are stable, settled in and sound great. The set includes an additional winter reed and two Gallagher staples. When Seth delivered the set, I had already built my own bellows, and I am willing include these with this set. They bellows aren’t anything fancy, but sturdy. Nailed, not sewn, Walnut paddles cut to the traditional shape, with David Daye leather Gusset. They are air tight and will be furnished with an extra long connector tube (5/8” radiator hose) that can be cut to size.

The same gear (half set minus the bellows) from Seth today would be $5,000 and a 3-4 year wait. I’m taking delivery on a fancier ¾ set later this month and want another piper to enjoy Seth’s outstanding work. I’m asking $4400.

There are no major scratches, chips or dings, but the usual wear and patina one would expect of a set of pipes that have been carefully put away between regular sessions. If you have any questions about the set, I’d be happy to answer. I’m near Washington , D.C. same time zone as New York.

  103. SOLD: NEW Hunter 7 key B Chanter etc. - (7 keys 1850 Coyne style with GLORIOUS sound)
Description: This is a rare oppurtunity to own NEW magical sounding Hunterpipes B chanter. Especialy since Sam & Peter waiting list is fully closed & since this is the last B made from the last Peter's piece of extremely rare Sri Lankan Ebony, which these days is banned. Finest sounding wood-stunning tone. In opinion of many there is no better sounded B chanters out there than Hunter ones. You can check also opinion of the great players like Ronan Browne, Mark Neilly… Whole chanter made entirely by hand; hand rolled&forget metal ect. Mounts are Manmade Ivory, metal in Brass. A sound mashine with glorius, rich, complex, wery beauthifull Peter Hunter B sound, Full of Toooooneeee. The wood resonates great warmth and depth, & this specialy design of Coyne gives this chanter something wery rare – a tone and character of the best 200 years old chanters, which is hard to beat. A great musician who in the past tried all kind of the wery best B chanters said, that they were all wery good, but this »OLD« Hunterpipes B chanter sound is something wery special and hard to find these days. Chanter comes with two+one original reeds (one is softer for easier beggining).
Reason of selling: FORCED SALE-FAMILY OBLIGATIONS, PROBLEMS & NO TIME
The reason of selling this chanter are huge family obligations (small babies)& problems and the fact that I don't have not time, to even finish my bellows, and even less to start practise. I was waiting wery hard for more than one year to get this great chanter, so it is not easy for me to sell it, before I even had opurtunity to start, but I have no choice at all ! I am guitar player and two years ago I heard Liam O'Flynn playing a solo in a ballad&I fall in love with Uilleann sound & so I order it, but I didn't know what kind of future I will have. It would be a big SIN if this magical sounding chanter would be there just to look. It must be played to make amazing music by someone who will devote time to it.
Price: The price is 1900 Euros! which is apr.275 Euros less that was an original price in this precious wood. The chanter is NEW-I didn't even start to practise. You will get this special B chanter without Hunterpipes waiting time, since order doors are closed. No compromises about this price! You will have to pay insured postage. Only serious, please and only in Euros please! Chanter actualy costs me much more, becouse of Bank money transfers to Engl. and traveling-fly to England, ect. Original price for this special B chanter in Februiary 2007 when I order was 1500 GBP-2175 Euros, but they were generous and lower the price for 100, since I ordered it in this last piece of S. Ebony with all keys.
EXTRA for FREE: I will also give to the new owner fully for free all other Uilleann things which I bought for beggining of my Uilleann pipes story: (Sean Potts CD ROM Tutorial, David Quinn CD »Pipes and Pipemaking«, David Quinn reedmaking book »The Piper's Despair« and I will add also two another things: a hand stiched bag which I made under Davy Stephenson supervision during my one-week staying at his workshop. It is made from top quality leather&special poly coat inside, which does not require seasoning and should give at least ten years trouble free service; Davy said that it should last for 20 years. The end of the bag neck is to long, not yet stiched to the end, so you can cut it for your own comfort. Lenght, put wooden insertion, and stich it to the end. I will give you also all parts which Davy gives me for my handstiched bellows (two Cocuswood already prepared boards, a piece of highest quality leather to last a lifetime and waxed/woven Kevlar Tiger thread, so you can glue&stich-finish it. (you can get all the instructions free on Stephenson site www.Bagpipeworks.co.uk. )

  105. SOLD: Des Seery Fully Keyed D Chanter - Des Seery full keyed D Chanter - This is a Seery chanter in ebony with 4 keys, wide bore and holes, with stainless steel and fake ivory mounts and brass plated keywork. It is in very good condition and it?s Rowsome copy. I have been playing it mainly at home. This chanter is high quality although Seery is more famous as a flutemaker. This chanter has got a power response and the tuning is excellent. It has been reeded by the own pipe maker and the three reeds work properly. I am selling this chanter due to financial difficulties in the launching of my new own office, it is the best chanter I have. The pictures are not in high quality but I can send new ones on request. I'm selling the chanter to help me to pay for my new regulators. I'm asking about €1,000 for it or best offer.

  108. SOLD: Charles Roberts D ½ Set - Chanter made from ebony with brass top piece and imitation ivory ferrules. One key, C natural. Stock made from rosewood. Completely overhauled in the last month by Eamonn Curran (resident reed maker of the Armagh pipers club). New Chanter reed and three new drone reeds. Drones stable under pressure. Chanter reed very comfortable to play and most importantly in tune!! Bag replaced also as I have issues with the Charles Roberts bag construction, bags constructed from multiple thin layers of leather glued together more often than not yield unsatisfactory results. The current leather bag also installed by Eamonn Curran is very solid.
The reason for sale is due to having another set with a further flat set on the way so I have to part with this set to recoup some of the cost flat sets tend to bring with their arrival. This was my first set so I am the sole owner.
The asking price is €1650 although all reasonable offers will be considered. I ask the above price as I wanted to sell a set in good playing order instead of the buyer receiving a set with a leaky bag and inheriting reed problems, thus i inherited the cost of overhauling them. Photos are included and if parties are intrested i will also supply sound multiple sound files.

  110. SOLD: Seth Gallagher D Practice Set - It is in perfect condition and has two good reeds. The bellows and bag are air-tight, all straps are like new. The condition is excellent with the exception of the brass needing a good polishing. I preferred the old look so I didn't shine it up. According to the previous owner, this set is about 7 years old and was purchased from Seth directly. The chanter is made of African blackwood with imitation ivory mounts. I believe the bellows is made of light maple and high grade leather. All straps are leather. I am upgrading to a 1/2 set so I'd like to sell this one to raise money for the step-up. I asked Seth what he woudl value this set at and he felt $1600 was fair, so that is what I am asking. I will attach photos once I get a usb cord for this camera.

  115. SOLD: Vignole's D Chanter, Kerry Low D Whistle & Thorton High D Whistle -
Vignoles D chanter This is a 2 year old Ebony D chanter with a very unique artificial ivory mounts. It's in very good condition, no cracks or dents. The tone is very sweet and crisp. Comes with 2 working reeds. Brand new on Michael Vignoles web site it goes for $780. I am asking $550 obo. I don't have any sound recordings, but you can hear the chanter here on Vignoles' web site: clip

Kerry Low D Whistle This was made from the makers of Chieftain Whistles. Phil Hardy came up with the Kerry Low D with a molded, tunable headjoint. The body is a aluminum alloy with no dents. Few light surface scratches from regular use; nothing deep or distracting from its beauty. It has a deep soft tone that plays easily throughout the 2 octives. Lark In the Morning lists it for $140. Anything over $100 takes it home.

Thorton High D whistle Wonderful low back pressure D whistle. Plays clear and true with very little chiff. Bought whistle this year. Brand new $88 - I'm selling it for $60.

Reason for the sale is a new C# set is almost ready and someone else deserves a good D chanter and whistles instead of it laying around not being played ! Thanks for all of your intrest.

There is a superfiscial crack on the inside near the ferrule that that does not penetrate all the way through, and does not affect the functioning of the chanter. 118. SOLD: Boisvert & Childress B ½ Set - ...
B Chanter by B.C. Childress, made in 2002
African Blackwood body with boxwood mounts and brass ferrules and "full mounts and ferrules" as per Childress' specifications - no keys. Blackwood chanter top(unkeyed) with "gooseneck" air tube. Includes an extra reed by Childress. Very mellow tone, easy to play in both octaves. Very worry-free chanter - I don't even look at the reed. Noticeable dulling on the brass (I never liked how it looked new so I don't polish them) but otherwise mint condition.
Drones by Dave Boisvert of Greenwood Pipes, made in 2002
African blackwood with boxwood mounts and brass ferrules, hollow boxwood mainstock with hand-rolled ferrules and brass switch, boxwood "cup" with hand-rolled ferrule, and boxwood plugs installed in tenor and baritone regulator holes. Boxwood "sound box" on bass drone with brass accent plate (extra plain boxwood box also supplied). Drones are fully reeded with elder (Minnesota grown & collected) drone reeds. There is a minor tuning issue with the tenor drone, I have to pull off the decorative boxwood cap to get it in tune. Not sure how this is remedied, but I'm including the cap anyway. Again, more dulling of the brass parts, but otherwise in tip-top shape both visually and aurally.
Leather bag by L&M Highland with blackwood/boxwood chanter and blowpipe stock by Dave Boisvert and blowpipe by Mike McHarg. Cherry bellows by Brad Angus. Cherry cheeks with ebony air valve, traditional "thong" style hinge and leather bellows with brass tacked red velvet cover and elbow pad. Includes leather arm and waist belts. The air supply tube is reinforced rubber hose and with PVC at the end. I never had proper stocks for the bellows. Not pretty, but it works. Includes a "Pipemajors" case and box of extra drone reeds and misc stuff.
Also throwing in a plain rosewood mouth-blown practice chanter in D with two plastic reeds. This works pretty well and can reach 2nd octave and "hard" D. It will fit into the headstock on the B chanter so if you want to make more noise, here ya go. You can also have my reed-making kit: gouge, straight-edge scraping knife, honing stones and oil, shooting board, various threads and waxes, staple forming thingy (I forgot the name), brass and copper tubing for staples, copper strips for bridles, toolbox, large box of Arundo donax for chanter reeds and scarlet elder (Sambucus pubens) cane in various sizes and grades for both chanter and drone reeds.

  120. SOLD: Bruce Du Ve D Full Set - Set in D by Bruce Du Ve. The set is African Blackwood and with Brass ferrules and regulator keys, with Imitation ivory mounts. The set was made c.1978.
    The set comprises the following:
Chanter, with 1 key (c natural), with brass top and stop key. The chanter is stamped B.W. DuVe, AN SPIDEAL.
Stock and drones, with a straight bass drone.
3 regulators, the bass reg having a straight bar. This set features an innovative removable bass regulator bar, allowing packing into a smaller case.
An additional chanter by Mickey Dunne, with c natural key, in Ebony with Boxwood mounts, is also included. The Mickey Dunne chanter does not have a top, but it fits the Bruce Du Ve chanter top.
Bag is by L & M. Bellows by Cillian O'Briain.
A case is not included in the sale.
Please note the F and G keys on the Tenor regulator shown not fitted in the photos, are now refitted.
    Reason for the sale:
I have been asked to sell this set for a customer who has purchased a set of my pipes recently. My client bought the set new from Bruce Du Ve in 1978, and has owned the set ever since. The set is well maintained, with no cracks in the timber, and is fully reeded. Drones and Regulator reeds are by Alan Burton, Chanter reeds by myself (Andy Faden). Bruce Du Ve was an innovative maker who only made a small number of sets, so this is an opportunity to become the owner of a rare and unusual set of pipes.

  121. SOLD: David Williams D Full Set - For personal reasons, I’m going to sell my full set before 4-6 months. It is a concert pitch (in ivory) made by Dave Williams in 1985 for my music teacher.
It’s in excellent condition ; A restoration was collectively made by Jacky Proux & Alain Froment last month (about 30 working hours):
Some welds were redone, certain parts in metal strengthened (without altering either the aesthetics or the sound of the instrument), the leather plugs were changed, keys re-plated, etc. This set is perfectly sealed!
The bellows (very comfortable/light) has an excellent return and has no leaks: it was made last year by Jacky Proux. My teacher has played this set during 20 years in the following bands : “Dan ar Braz”,” Gwerz”, “Den”, etc.
David Power playing my set with my teacher (on the right with his beautiful C# Full set)
    Myself playing these pipes
I will take my final decision concerning the buyer before some weeks, so there are no emergencies.
I’m waiting for serious offers only (I won’t sell it under 10.000€)
PS: There are possibilities to get this set without chanter or with my Froment chanter or with the original Williams chanter
NB: Each drones can be tuned in E (ferrule system)

  124. SOLD: Charles Roberts D Practise Set - This set (chanter, bellows and bag) was made by Charles Roberts in 1999. I am the original owner.
The chanter is made of African blackwood, brass and imitation ivory, and is in D, with two keys: Cnat and Fnat. It has been reeded very recently by Michael Donovan. The reed is excellent and is made of spruce, which gives it extra stability. It is very easy to play. Minor tuning problems were fixed by adequate rushing. The chanter sounds very well and in tune, as demonstrated by the audio and video recordings. The keys work fine, one imitation ivory mount is missing.
The bellows works perfectly, arm strap slightly worn.
The bag had had some leaking problems, which were solved a few years ago by gluing an extra layer of thin leather, so the bag is a bit thicker than usual - this sets the basic pressure level slightly higher, but the chanter itself requires very little pressure, so overall the set is easy to play and is very stable, including with drones (I played it with drones for years). The bag already has a cup for a drone and reg mainstock, and is covered with a beautiful cover recently made from high quality blue velvet.
You can see the set in the attached photos, hear it in the attached audio recording, and finally, both see and hear it (and me) in action at the following u-tube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOUoEF7rEEs
I am selling because I have been using another, fully-keyed chanter, for several years, but more importantly, I have recently become a Rogge-addict, and after having bought a Rogge full set in C, I am now upgrading my D set to a full set with new chanter and regs.

  125. SOLD: Pat O'Riordan Low D Whistle - For sale is a Low D whistle made by Pat O'Riordan. (# DB-029 dated 1998-see photos)
Those familiar with his instruments know that they have become collectors' items as he nears retirement This one is a gem in aluminum. Lovely, bell-like timbre with the easy transition to the second octave consistent with Pat's whistles.

  128. SOLD: Desi Seery D Full Set - These pipes are older and well used. They are tied into a new L&M bag. The common stock is weathered, but otherwise they look pretty nice. The chanter has a twist style shut off valve on the top. I think that there used to be a pin there to line up the holes for the top. There is a small hole at the top of the chanter where the pin would go. This is not afffecting the performance of the chanter top or chanter. The chanter was recently professionally repaired to replace a small chip out of one of the key blocks. The repair is not visible. The chanter has four keys and blocks for one more key, I believe. The chanter currently has a reed made by David Daye and is working nicely in both octaves, with some rushing of the chanter staple and a little tape here and there. I broke the bass drone reed, so I replaced the drone reeds with eze-drone reeds and they are working well. The regs are way beyond my ability. They are reeded and I can get some good sounds out of some key combinations, but I really don't know how to tune them or play them. The bracket on the bass drone is loose and can be slid around, but this does not affect its functioning. The pipes are blackwood (ebony??) with brass and plastic. I purchased these as an opportunity to try out the regs and try a chanter different than my practice set chanter. I like the chanter alot, but the regs are way beyond me. I am asking $5500, or best offer, plus shipping and insurance. I can accept Paypal, or other payment methods. I would also consider trades for a flat half set and some D drones. Please feel free to contact me at bagpiperse@netzero.com with questions, to hear them over the phone, or to discuss an offer.

  132. SOLD: Full set in D - Full set of either Dan O'Dowd or depending upon who you believe, Wilkinson concert D pipes. The chanter took a trip to Belfast and was identified as Dan O'Dowd, but was damaged beyond repair and subsequently stripped of it's mountings and keyword and a new one built by BC Childress. I actually wouldn't mind keeping that. The drones are reeded and sound great, the regs have never been seriously reeded up. Blackwood, brass, real ivory, with a cocobolo mainstock. Entire set is in excellent condition, airtight and ready to play except for setting up the regs. I have a full set coming ahead of schedule and a number of personal expenses that suggest I shouldn't attempt to maintain both full sets, so I'm making this one available. Better photos to follow. I'm entertaining offers.

  134. SOLD: Seth Gallagher D Practice Set - Seth Gallagher D Practice Set with Brass Rings in immaculate condition. Four key mounts and no keys. I am the 2nd owner of these and the set was in Seth’s hands before I bought them to check out. I have owned them about 7 years and believe they were about 2 years old when I bought them. My total time on them has been about 4-6 hours. Seth made a new reed for them about 4 years ago (as I recall) which may have an hour on it. The instrument has been kept in a humidified and air-conditioned room with seven harps and a grand piano. Children, job, and not enough practice time suggests that selling to someone that will use this set is a wise move! The bottom note does have a piece of black electrical tape on it to decease the size of the hole, which was likely placed by the previous owner, who, I am guessing, had a small right hand/finger. I’ll include Spillane’s tutor and the Clarke tutor + cassette plus a cordura case. Contact Dan Sullivan at pipes@cdlweb.net or call my office at 815.344.1392. 135. SOLD: David Daye D ½ Set - Everything but the drones and bag were received new from David in April '07. The drones and bag are about 2 years old and were bought second hand. The chanter is a combination of PVC and brass, the bag is high quality leather, and the drones are delrin/brass. All parts are in great shape and the set plays well. The reed sounds great (see sound samples). The only thing that needs adjusting is the tenor drone reed (which is synthetic). Right now I have the tenor drone taped over (imo it sounds fine with just bass and baritone). If you have a large waistline, you may need to get a new piece of plastic tubing as I'm pretty thin, but it shouldn't be a problem. The set will be available mid to late November as I'm waiting on another set to arrive. The set has been awesome in getting me off the ground, but I'm ready to upgrade to something I can eventually add regs to. This set would be ideal for a beginner, or someone looking for compact travel/spare set.
$1100 for the set not including shipping. A half set from David costs $1,300 and is about a year wait. For more info see his website.

  137. SOLD: Kirk Lynch Drones, Kevin Thompson Regulators D ¾ Set - No Chanter - Set is a 3/4 set. NO CHANTER. Drones, bag and bellows by Kirk Lynch in the late 90s. Regulators by Kevin Thompson. This set was purchased from a piper in NM who kept them in mint condition and they have been kept in this condition in a non-smoking home. Drones are a beautiful rose-colored wood, probably cocobolo or mopane and still look brand new. Regulators are black-stained boxwood. The drones use Kirk's synthetic reeds, the regs have cane. All but the baritone drone reed are working well. I have hesitated from working on the reeds too much as you will probably want to modify them depending on how you play. Drones play and sound great and the regs are well in tune and airtight and have been serviced in the past by Seth Gallagher.Seller has decided to pursue fiddle as her primary instrument so these must go. Asking $3000. Comes with a hard case. Set will ship from the Los Angeles area.

  138. SOLD: Mark Donahoe D ½ Set - This half set was made bespoke for the one previous owner in 2006 by Mark Donahoe of County Kerry. The set is in good condition.
Chanter - D pitched, to a Rowsome pattern, with scalloped finger holes. It is in African blackwood with brass ferrules and imitation ivory mounts. It has a brass stop key and tuning pin fitted. There are blocks for additional keys.
Drones - Reeded, in blackwood with brass ferrules and tuning slides, imitation ivory mounts.
Bag - Large volume, chrome tanned leather, seasoned, sealed, glued and stitched. African blacwood blowpipe and chanter stock. 1” diameter plastic blowpipe with BSP fitting.
Bellows - large volume, recently repaired by Mark Donahoe. Rosewood paddles, 1” leather belts, pads for elbow and hip, leather hinge
Case - Hard case with lockable clasps and keys.
Reason for sale: I purchased this set in error. I am a complete novice and should have been starting with a practice set. I have found it difficult to manage with the drones.
Issues: The bellows have been repaired in October 2007.
The set was appraised for me by Davy Stephenson who told me it was a good set, but not right for me as a beginner. The bag and bellows are too large for me.

  139. SOLD: Tim Britton D ¾ Set - The set is made of rosewood (except for the stocks) and is very lightweight. The chanter has four keys and a metal top, no stop key. The metalwork is brass. This set has a number of “extras”: an “A” drone with a separate switch in addition to the normal 3 drones, and an “E” key on the baritone regulator between the “D” and the “F#” keys. Some of the tenons use cork for the seals, and some have waxed thread.
I purchased the half set used about 7 years ago. Tim added the two regulators for me a few years back. He had enough of the original rosewood left from when he constructed the original set to make the tenor and baritone regulators. At that time, he also had enough rosewood available for the bass regulator, but I did not have that one constructed. It’s likely he still has the rosewood if the buyer would want to add it to complete the set. I have been storing it in a soft guitar case. There is no “official” case.
The set has minimal wear, but is obviously “pre-owned”. There was a crack on the bell of the bass drone that was repaired prior to my obtaining the set. One of the wooden supports for a key on the chanter was broken off, but repaired by Tim Britton. A hairline crack is still visible. The regulators are in virtually new condition. It takes a considerable amount of pressure on the bag, by design. The bellows are very comfortable and pump very well. There are no leaks.
The sound of the set is very open, lively and expressive. Please see Tim Britton’s web page here for more about his pipes: www.skep.com/britton/pipes.htm
I’m selling the set because I have another 3/4 set that I’m playing most of the time now. The Britton set is beautiful, but I would rather have the money from the sale to fund my other vices than keep a set that I’m not playing. It should go to a good home.
My asking price is $6000 plus shipping and insurance, which is about 1/3 off of what a new 3/4 set with these options would cost new from Tim.

  140. SOLD: B.C. Childress B Chanter - In rosewood, made in 2001, artificial ivory rings, brass keyless headpiece. The chanter has 4 keys; long F natural, Bb, C natural, & Ab. Included are one reed by Bruce Childress and a spare by Brad Angus (actually made for an Angus B flat chanter, but plays very well in this one also). There has been no damage to, previous repairs done on, or modifications done to the chanter other than a little tape on the back D. It plays well in tune with what I would describe as a medium bag pressure requirement, and a medium volume. It's a very comfortable stick to hold, thinner than many flat chanters, and has a scalloped back D, and a right hand "thumbrest". B.C.'s current (Sept. 04') price for the same chanter would be about $1,100.00 dollars. I'm asking $900.00 dollars U.S.$ plus shipping and insurance charges. I'm in California. I'm selling it because I acquired another B chanter I like just a little better. Here's a few low resolution photos.

  142. SOLD: Johnny Burke C# ¾ Set - [EDIT: New Information: it is now believed that this set was made by Willie Rousome and repaired by Johnny Bourke in the 80's.] 3/4 set of Johnny Burke (died c.1903, Dublin) C# uilleann pipes from the late 19th Century. (Apparently this set is by another Johnny Burke, not the one we are familiar with - Pat.) The set comprises a chanter, bag, stock with three drones and two regulators, and a bellows. It is fully reeded and is playing well. The set is made from ebony with brass and ivory detailing/ornamentation throughout. The stock is of rosewood.
The chanter has three keys. The head of the chanter is metal and is unlikely to be original.
The bellows is by Davy Spillane ( Dublin ) and is about 20 years old.
Condition: One regulator key needs to be re-sprung.
Reason for sale: I have another set and don’t play this set enough to justify keeping it.

  143. SOLD: Seth Gallagher B ¾ Set - For all those serious pipers out there, I am happy to announce that I am selling my fully loaded 3/4 Seth Gallagher Flat Pitch Pipes in B. These pipes were built by Seth in the summer of 2003. They are made of ebony and brass. The Chanter is fully keyed with the traditional F natural wrap around. The chanter also has a wooden top with no stop key. The reed is working well and comes with a number of back up reeds made over the years. The drones are very warm and stable with the original cane reeds made by Seth. The regs are working well and reeds are made of cane. Bellows are in great shape and I had new leather put on about 2 years ago. The pipe bag is also very new. These pipes are in very good condition! There are no major scratches or chips, just the regular wear and tear for a set that is 4 years old. I am selling the pipes because I feel that I am not playing these pipes enough due to my busy schedule and my hands are too small for the stretch. Gallagher pipes are professional class and are use by many professional pipers. Please see the attached photos and if more are required please don’t hesitate to ask. Also feel free to check the link that I added below for sound clips played by Brian Bigley. This is the exact set that I am selling. He borrowed my pipes to record on his album. As you may not know, Seth is now on a 4 year waiting list. He is also not making B pipes anymore and only offers C pipes and concert pitch. I decided to sell the pipes for $8000 United States Dollars plus shipping. 144. SOLD: Peter Hunter D Chanter - Peter Hunter wide-bore concert pitch (D) Uilleann pipe chanter. This is a top end chanter made by Peter Hunter in his Micklethwaite workshop (1995). The finest ebony available, hand-rolled brass swan-neck & cap, fully-keyed (ring F nat, G#, Bb & C nat). It’s in full working order, was very recently checked over by Hunter pipes and comes with a good reed and spare. This is a superb chanter, it has that big Hunter sound, crisp hard ‘D’s and ‘E’s, glassy back ‘D’s and a tone that sings with rich harmonics and partials. Check out the sound clip on Hunter pipes site under ‘Hunter D’ to hear this chanter. Serious offers only please. Will post anywhere so long as you pay for it and the postage.
NB. I’m selling because I have two concert chanters and 'haven’t played in concert pitch for months because I’m addicted to a glorious Hunter B set and need the cash to get even more bits! : )

  145. SOLD: Neil O'Grady D Full Set - Neil O'Grady/BC Childress full set--a full set of Uilleann pipes in Cocobolo with extra chanter keys. The set includes everything but a case. You will receive two sets of reeds for Regulators and drones, popping strap and bag. This set was purchased in 2002 from Neil O'Grady. It was sent to BC Childress in 2004 and completely reworked (cork replacing twine as sealant). So there are three drones and three regulators, bellows, bag, popping strap, chanter included.
I am selling this because I want to start over. I will be going with a half set or practice set. The regulators were very intimidating to play for a novice and prohibited me from practicing. Neil's pipes are very well constructed and with BC Childress rework you know you are in for quality. Neil's current price for a full set is $4000. This is my asking price because of the excellent condition as well as the rework. You pay the shipping but it will be actual cost only. I won't increase shipping just to make more money.

  147. SOLD: Seth Gallagher D ½ Set - A fully loaded half set by Seth Gallagher - as new condition with zero issues. Then why am I selling this? They are my wife's and she is not able to give the time to play them that she would like and is sure they could be more fully used by another piper.
Ebony pipes with silver keys, nickel silver metalwork, and ivory mounts; all four chanter keys; chanter shut-off key; trumpet-style bass drone end; extra A drone with pop-gun style plug (also in mammoth ivory) - all reeds in perfect shape; Beautiful bellows in black leather with velvet pad. The set has all the Seth Gallagher style and design. I am sure there is more detail I can add but look at the photos that speak for themselves.
The pipes are 2 year old but have not been played the last time by a professional piper a month ago who said they were immaculate if only he could…… Stunning workmanship all around. Seth's work is highly praised by many in the Uilleann community, including Paddy Maloney.
    Costs:
    uilleann pipes: $4,800.00
    bellows: $300.00
    Total paid: $5,100.00
Asking: $4500.00 (which includes a black solid case for shipment at no extra cost) Purchaser pays shipment and insurance costs.
I can take 10% down to demonstrate serious interest and hold the set for 3 months to enable you to gather the balance.
Of Note: For a couple of reasons. This is the price as it was set upon back then; Seth's price list has seen an increase since then. Additionally, Mr. Gallagher's waiting list for D sets is now being estimated at 18 to 20 months.

  148. SOLD: Seth Gallagher D Full Set - Full set made by Seth Gallagher in 2003. Ebony with brass & imitation ivory mounts. Chanter is fully keyed and well reeded. There is a tell-tale check in the imitation ivory reed cap, but other than that the chanter is absolutely perfect. The previous owner did have a section of the bass drone repaired several years ago by pipemaker C.J. Dixon who used cocobolo for some reason. Its a fine bit of work which has no effect at all on the sound. You can't even see it under the regs, but I did want to mention it. As to drones - 2 sets of reeds included in sale (1 cane - 1 synthetic). I like the the latter as they are a bit brighter to complement Seth's robust chanters. The bass reg is the traditional "straight" style, but Seth is making a Taylor style "wrap around" section which would be included as well as Seth's bronze regulator reeds. The L&M bag is oft played, supple (ok-Limp...s) but still in good nick. You will need a bellows as I play a Dow which I use for my other set.
The reason for the sale is that I play a half set at sessions and I got a bit over zealous vis: regulators and later came to the realization that I'm never really going to use them to their full extent. Plus an opportunity has arisen to obtain a Froment set in C and (you guessed it) that costs plenty.
In excellent condition, this is a top quality set the likes of which don't become available often and those of you looking at this advert (and I thank you) know what you're about. Seth's wait for a full set is three years minimum, at a cost of $7800 (w/o bellows), so this is an opportunity for serious bidders to get something unheard of in the UP world...that is: Instant Gratification! (s) at a reduced cost of $7000. US
Buyer pays all shipping costs. Domestic (w/ proper insurance) is probably around $150-$200) I think I've covered everything, but I will update if anything comes to mind. Please feel free to ask any Q's and I will respond promptly. Thank you for looking.

  157. SOLD: Charles Roberts D ½ Set - Bought in 2004 from Roberts, they are made of brass,African blackwood (drones) and Ebony (Chanter);Chanter is fitted with F and C natural key.The set is in excellent condition as I have always taken good care of it (see pictures).Chanter has been re-reeded by Fergus Finnegan and baritone drone reed replaced and made by Denis Quigley in Dublin.(all the rest is exactly as it was when bought in 2004 and doing well)
I have been playing this set for more than 3 years and never had any problem. The set is very good in all weather conditions. It nearly costs me to sell them but I got a full set from Seth Gallagher and my B full set from Andreas Rogge in on the way (cannot afford to keep all those instruments/have only two arms and it would be a shame to leave a set like this unplayed)
The set can easily be carried in a small case as Bass drone can be splited in 3 parts.(very handy when travelling by plane)

  158. SOLD: Seth Gallagher D ¾ Set - I am selling my used 3/4 concert pitch set made by Seth Gallagher in September 2003. The set is playing well and is in fairly good condition. There are a few chips in the plastic mounts and the bass drone trumpet piece was broken and remade by Pipe Maker C.J. Dixon. He did a great job and as an experiment made the replacment piece out of cocobolo and the bass drone has a better sound and look.
The Chanter is playing well but could use a new reed because it has been adjusted to cold Canadian Weather. Drones are working well and have both cane reeds and brass/plastic reeds for colder weather. The regs have the bronze reeds made by Seth and are well in tune. The pipes have been fitted with a brand new bag by C.J. Dixon in September 2006 but I will also included the original pipe bag with green velvet cover.
The reason why I am selling is that I simply don't have the time or desire to put into the pipes anymore. Between my career, pipe band drumming, concertina, and other interests.... the pipe are way down the list and it can be weeks to a month without me playing a single note. not to mention that Ottawa is way too cold for pipes. I really want these pipes to find a god home.
Seth is a good maker and makes a great instrument. His wait time is 2 and a half years and seems to keep going up. I am asking for $6500 american for these pipes or best offer considering the few chips in the plastic but I will not hold out for much less.

  159. SOLD: Hunterpipes Concert Pitch Chanter - 4 Keys, Ebony body with imitation ivory mounts and brass metalwork. Bought in March 2006, exquisite condition with tone to die for. I can't believe I am selling this chanter, but the times make it so. Main reason for selling is I am graduating college in a couple months and want to get a head start on paying off my loans as well as I have a B chanter on the way and B is the pitch I want to play in. These chanters currently go for 925 pounds new from Peter and Sam so I am looking to get something in that ballpark but am certainly willing to accept reasonable offers. The pictures here are from the Hunterpipes website and are of the very same chanter just after it was completed, the chanter has not sustained any damage and is like new. Included with the sale are 2 rolled copper staples that came from the makers. The chanter has recieved great reviews from all those whom have played it, which I made sure to do since this chanter is capable of way more than I am currently.

  160. SOLD: JOHNNY BOURKE Drones & Regs - I took the hard decision to sell my pipes, a Johnny Bourke full set made in 1982, in african blackwood and brass. They were made as the sister set to Davy Spillane's Bourke set and have the last of the Bourke hand-made keys in the Crowley teardrop style. It comes with bellows, new L&M bag and case. Reeded by Allan Moller. No chanter. It is a unique set and plays like a dream. Unfortunately I cannot afford to keep that set so I am forced to sell it. I am now looking for a good bag and bellows.

  161. SOLD: Seth Gallagher D Full Set - This set is approximately five years old- second owner - but it is in prime playing condition. It has a Taylor bass reg which is very nice as it eliminates the cumbersome (and often poorly placed) long extension piece sitting on the left arm. I understand Seth makes most of his sets this style nowadays unless the buyer wants the "traditional" look.
The set is brass - Seth's "standard" - apart from the wood chanter top which is an "extra."
    The chanter has four keys.
The chanter also has a stop mechanism built into the chanter top. This is a unique design of Seth's and is much handier than the customary long stop mechanism on the chanter top.
The whole set was just tweaked and tuned by Seth and everything is in top working order.
He also put in his new design reg reeds which are totally bombproof.
This is a real "players" set.
The set would run $7575 new with the four keys and the wooden wind cap. I shudder to think what the wait would be.
As always, I'm more than happy to take trade-ins of good flutes, whistles, or pipes (Uilleann, or Scottish small....No GHB please, I have my limits) as part of the final price.............$6999

  162. SOLD: Andy Faden Chanter - Concert pitch ebony chanter with brass ferrules, woodden top, C nat key, chanter reed. Two characteristics of Andy Faden's superb craftmanship:
    1. The chanter top is perfectly sealed with cork ring.
    2. The reed seat is enhanced with a brass tube and the reed can be easily moved up and down in this tube, which makes tuning the chanter easier.

Condition Practically new. The plastic protective cover is still on the chanter top. Here is a photocopy of Andy's receipt.
Issues The chanter is very easy to play, and jumps to the second octave with no efforts. This chanter is perfect for player who prefer delicate instruments.
Materials the item is made from: Ebony, brass
Reason for sale I've lost interest in Uilleann Piping. It is too difficult for me.
Asking price Chanter is 560 pounds (GBP) or $1100 (US) or 850 Euros including shipping.
If you are interested, I will sell a bag (made by Pat Stones a couple of years ago) and bellows made by Richard Patkos (a phenomenal young piper). The bellows is very powerful and has a big volume but has no paddings. The bag has stocks. I sell the bag for $80 (40 pounds, 60 Euros). Comes with two chanter reeds, as well as a full set of cane drone reeds and a full set of synthetic drone reeds. Regulator reeds are cane. This set also comes with a deluxe Rogge flight case. I am selling this set because I simply have not the time to devote to it: something a set of this very-high caliber deserves. 166. SOLD: Brad Angus B Full Set - Here's a like new Brad Angus full set in B. Ebony and nickel silver. The stock is made of a very hard species of mahogany for superior resitance to any cracking. It is an improved Coyne design, with a four-key chanter, fully chromatic, plus a stop key. It will be dearly missed.

Fully reeded, with two extra chanter reeds and extra drone and regulator reeds as well. Fully chromatic chanter. The G#, Bb, and F keys come in really handy when playing with fiddle or accordion settings of tunes (Altan CD's, for instance). The chanter plays easily right up to the third octave D. I hate to have to part with them, but a neck/shoulder injury has prevented me from being able to squeeze the bag for the last five months, and w/o health insurance I am in deep financial dung up to my neck.

I do not play professionally, and the set has never left my music room, which is temperature (67F) and humidity controlled (70%) year-round.

A new set like this from Brad is $7700.

There is a fourth baritone regulator that I had Brad make for me, ($1100) that is included with the sale of the set. It has an E key on it. It is great for playing tunes in E minor (such as The Kid on the Mountain, The Tarbolton, Scatter the Mud, etc.). It is a quick swap for the normal bari reg. The E key sits opposite the G key on the tenor reg so that you can clearly define an E minor chord with a B in the chanter (impossible on normal reg setups) with E and G in the tenor and bari regs, or a G in the chanter (also impossible on normal reg setups) with the E on the bari reg alone. (The extra regulator's keys are thus D, E, F#, G, A, instead of the normal D, F#, G, A.) You can also clearly define (not just suggest) a C Major chord with a C in the chanter (again impossible on normal reg setups) with the E on the bari reg plus the G on the tenor reg.

In some of the pictures I realized I took them with my Cillian O'Brien bellows. I will give you your choice of Cillian's bellows or Brad's "old style" bellows. The old style bellows with a thin strap of leather as a hinge takes some getting used to, but I don't really prefer one over the other. For performing, the O'Brien bag is safer-- the thin leather strap hinge on the old style bellows tends to wear and suddenly break, and of course, there's never an opportune moment for this to happen, but since I don't play professionally, it doesn't matter to me.

If you're a serious piper, you know of Brad's artistry and perfectionism. The sonic balance of power is perfect-- strong fat drone sound, regs that don't overpower the chanter or sound like car horns, and a gorgeous chanter tone that is a pleasure to hear, even for people who think they don't like bagpipes. This instrument never ceases to surprise those I play it for. (My D 3/4 set, on the other hand, which I am keeping to retain some pipering chops, makes some people cringe in a reflective room. It is really too loud, unlike the Angus set, which is pleasant, strong, and controlled.)

  168. SOLD: Van Daal Concert Pitched ½ Set - A half set of Concert pitch Uilleann Bagpipes in Ebony and Brass by Pipemaker Marc Van Daal. This is a very nice looking and sounding set that has treated me very well and it has some great benefits to it such as a C natural key and a stop key on the chanter, an airtight beautiful bellows with blue velvet covered hip and elbow pads, a hollow mainstock which is unique on a D set but gives a strong and beautiful overtone series on the drones (which sound great, very alive), an L&M highland bag for uilleann pipes which is a great bag because they are so airtight, and three great reeds that come with the chanter (one made by Marc, the other two by resident So. Cal Piper's club reedmaker Michael O'Donovan one of which was doctored by Benedict Koehler).

This set has been great for me. I have used it to play many live shows and to record with. I have only ever heard rave reviews on the tone quality and overall instrument sound from this set, and comments have been made about them by some of the finest pipe makers in the world (such as David Quinn, Benedict Koehler, Michael Hubbert, Bill Haneman, and Martin Preshaw) who have been impressed by their make and tone. They would make a great set for anyone from beginners to advanced intermediate, but anyone should be happy with this set.

The only reason I am selling is because I have had the opportunity to have a B set custom made for me in just 1 year! The new set is a hefty price though, so I need to sell this one to help finance the new one. I wish I had the capability to keep both, but hopefully this set will benefit someone out there looking for a good quality set without the wait!!!

I am asking $3200 dollars U.S. and will take serious offers (but please remember all funds are going toward the new set, i'm not trying to make money off these).

Please contact me at Superchef21@hotmail.com, or www.myspace.com/irishbagpipes to ask questions or discuss purchasing.

  175. SOLD: Seth Gallagher D ¾ Set - The half set was purchased in 1997 and the two regulators were added in 2002. They are made of blackwood with brass and fake ivory. There is a C natural key on the chanter. They've been played in big concert halls and outdoor festivals and i have never been disappointed. The regulator keys are tear drop shaped, not the figure 8 shaped ones. I asked seth to do that because i thought it looked cooler. there are no real issues. One of the bottom pieces of fake ivory is chipped and i moved the stock so there is a patch in the bag but was sealed by Seth with this special glue they use on boats. It is air tight. They are in great playing condition and they are suited to me. Seth is great when it comes to making reeds that suit your style of playing.
The reason I am selling them is because the oil changing place put the oil fliter on wrong and wrecked my car. The place didnt have insurance and they have closed up shop and their phone is disconnected. It costs $7000 to replace a brand new engine and i am a school teacher which means i am broke.
Seth is selling the same type of set for $5350 so that's what i am asking. I don't want to sell these pipes, I have to. Hopefully they will go to a good home. These pipes have character. And as soon as I hit the top of the irish charts, they will double in value.

  177. SOLD: Brad Angus Full set in Bb - Illness and unemployment forces me to sell this fine set of pipes. I simply need the money......
A full set in Bb made originally for Brad himself. Playing fairly, but would benefit from regulator adjustment, maybe a new reed in the tenor.
I bought the set from Brad two years ago, and haven't played it much - I must admit, they are just not the right thing for me. I love the sound of narrow bore pipes, but feel much more at home playing a D-set.
The set was adjusted, fitted with a couple of new reeds and a new bag last autumn by Chris Bayley.
It has a small nick on the bass regulator, but that is about all that I could find wrong - overall it is in fine shape, it has an antique look that I find suits the mellow sound of the set.
A small sound sample. MP3 not very well played :-)
I'm throwing in an extra bellows (the original was a bit small to my taste), a bunch of reeds, and a sturdy hard case.
Asking price $5500 plus shipping from Copenhagen, Denmark.
I paid $7000 two years ago, so I think it is a fair price.

  179. SOLD: Copeland D Whistle - Here's a like new Copeland D whistle in brass. Tapered (conical) body, tunable. It is absolutely, hands down, the best whistle (and the most expensive) that I own, and I hate to have to part with it, but I am in deep financial dung up to my neck.

It may be the best whistle you will ever play. It is the best whistle I have ever played. It is so easy and forgiving to blow-- it can take a lot of variation in pressure without squealing or playing out of tune, and it records beautifully. It almost plays itself. Even cranning on the lowest D is no problem on this whistle. It shall be dearly missed.

I do not play professionally, and the whistle has rarely left my room. Probably only twice, actually, for my sister's annual winter solstice party. It has been kept meticulously clean with Scotch Brite pads, and I have only polished it once with four ought (0000) steel wool for the shiney pictures posted here.

Some of the pix were taken with only a Scotch Brite cleaning, and they came out better. Personally, I don't like it so shiney. Then it doesn't match my D pipes.

Not much else to say. If you're a serious whistle player, you know of Michael Copeland's artistry in design and sonic perfection. This whistle is $300 new. I am asking $225.

    Beautiful bellows by Jim Schaefer in padauk and black leather with African blackwood "thistle-shaped" air intake valve with silver Celtic knotwork "grate";
Custom Cedar Creek case in "graphite futura" exterior and black velvet interior with accessory compartment, shroud, nickel hardware (including combination lock), two handles (one on the short end and one on the long end), and a built-in thermometer/hygrometer.
Stunning workmanship all around. Seth's work is highly praised by many in the uilleann community, including Paddy Maloney. Jim's bellows work is unsurpassed - upon seeing this bellows (the bellows I requested Jim to make for this set), David Power immediately ordered an identical bellows.
    Costs:
    uilleann pipes: $4,800.00
    bellows: $300.00
    case: $300.00
    Total paid: $5,400.00
Asking: $5,000.00 (everything is literally barely touched)
I can take 10% down to demonstrate serious interest and hold the set for somewhere between half a year to a year (we’ll talk) for you if you'd like the time to gather the balance.
Of Note: For a couple of reasons, I had ordered this set two and a half years ago and only just received it recently. This is the price as it was set upon ordering back then; Seth's price list has seen an increase since then. Additionally, Mr. Gallagher's waiting list for D sets is now being estimated at 18 to 20 months.

  181. SOLD: Koehler & Quinn/Gallagher hybrid Full Set - For sale: Koehler & Quinn/Gallagher hybrid full set of D-pitched uilleann pipes.
    The Chanter
The chanter was made by David Quinn and Benedict Koehler in 2003. Its design is based off of Mick O'Brien's Willie Rousome chanter and has boxwood mounts, brass keys (C-natural, F-natural, G-sharp), and Honduras rosewood for its main wood construction. The chanter is bright, strong without being overbearing, very well in-tune and a pleasure to play. (I can't believe I'm selling this thing!)
    The Drones
The drones were one of the very first batches made by Seth Gallagher in New York. These drones have been complimented by virtually every musician who has played or heard them as having a wonderful buzz and a pleasure to listen to. Indeed, there is something special about this set of Gallagher drones that make them a wonderful companion to the chanter.
    The Regulators
The regulators are also out of Seth Gallagher's workshop although have been fitted with other reeds (exception: the bass regulator reed is Mr. Gallagher's). Once in-tune, they stay in tune for impressively extended periods of time: I have to tweak the tuning rushes about once or twice a year but with those exceptions, they are remarkably stable even in my wide-ranging New England climate. The bass regulator is of the traditional straight-bar design with a fine endcap that visually complements the regulator very nicely.
    The Bellows
The bellows are of Michael Dow (of York, Maine) manufacture and are heavy-duty, tough, long-lasting, and easy to use.
I have enjoyed several years of playing this set and have spent lots of time becoming familiar with the set. It is only through financial necessity have I decided to sell this instrument: I have decided to "go flat" and obtain a set of pipes pitched in C. Due to this expenditure, I am forced to sell my K&Q/Gallagher D set, much to my chagrin, in order to fund the flat set.
I've replaced all the binding/thread on all the joints of the instrument; I've also polished all the brass . . . if you prefer the patina, have no fear for it will return soon!
Pictures of the set are available in addition to sound clips; please email me at jhohl AT the-spa DOT com for more information. I hope to sell this set by mid-August and, ideally, can hand them to the new owner at the Vermont Pipers' Gathering www.pipersgathering.org.
    Pricing
To obtain a new set (similar to this one) from Seth Gallagher, it would cost you nearly two years and $7225.00. The Koehler & Quinn chanter adds significant value to this set; their ordering books have been closed for years, so that chanter further enhances the value of this set. In addition, these drones are quite unlike the other Gallagher drones I've listened to over the years. Consequently, I'm asking $7100 for this set of pipes; I am willing to negotiate if someone feels that they have a fair offer.

  182. SOLD: Bruce Childress C ¾ Set - Chanter, stock and drones were made in 1998, with tenor and baritone regulators added in 2005. Set is blackwood with brass and faux ivory mounts. Chanter has C-nat and F-nat keys, and well as a stop key on the brass wind cap. Recent L&M bag with burgundy-colored velvet bag cover. New bellows by David Boisvert. Drone reeds are brass with plastic tongues by Bruce Childress. Chanter and regulator reeds are cane, also by Bruce Childress.
I’m selling the set for two reasons: 1) I need the cash; 2) I don’t play this set very often, as I prefer to play in B.

  183. SOLD: Seth Gallagher D Full Set - made with Nickel/Sterling Silver and synthetic Ivory. Chanter, Drones and regulators are in Ebony. Bellows are made from Cherry.
The set is in good condition, is playing well and has been regularly maintained. The chanter, bag and bellows are 4 years old, I added the rest a year later in 2003. Bellows are air tight. Chanter has been to Seth for modifications and "upgrades".
I am selling because I am spreading myself "too thin" on practice sessions with other instruments and want to focus on Northumbrian Piping.

  184. SOLD: Alan Ginsberg C ½ Set & Dave Burleigh NSP - Uilleann Pipes flat pipes in C, half set in Blackwood, made by Alan Ginsberg, Northumbrian Pipes in African Blackwood with Boxwood chanter made by Dave Burleigh 11 keyed chanter with complicated drones, one bellows used for both sets and wooden box for storage. Both sets of pipes have not been played for about 15+ years and are in need of restoration. I acquired them from a friend who relocated to the Far East and didn't think they would work well out there in the humidity. Basically I am a strings person and although I initially was enthusiastic about learning I soon gave up. The emergence of a family put paid to any further dabbling and they have remained in their box since. Financial pressures have forced me to consider whether I really need them still and therefore I have decided to sell them. I would accept offers around £600 for both sets given the restorations costs necessary. Would consider selling separately if necessary.

  186. SOLD: Quinn/Pedersen/McNulty ¾ Set - Quinn Pedersen McNulty ¾ Set (bass reg included). I bought the chanter Christmas 1994. It is stamped "D.M. QUINN" on the front and, underneath the C natural key, "7902" - thus, second chanter, 1979. The seller bought it from a fellow who lived in Vermont at the time. The chanter is blackwood, the metal work is brass, the mounts are maple; also the set has a glued naughahide bag which I made, with the original Quinn maple chanter stock and blowpipe. The chanter has the C natural key and blocks for the addition of four more keys - Bb, G#, Fnat, and high D. I will also include measurements made by Ben Koehler of a Quinn chanter of similiar vintage which had all five keys, which you can use as a guide for adding more keys if you wish. Also I'll send along instructions for reeding/setting up the chanter. The drones were made for me by San Francisco pipemaker John Pedersen in 1996. The wood is ebony, the metalwork is brass (very ornate turnings), the mounts are of Corian, a mineral composite used in making countertops. If you're worried about that I should say that Corian doesn't seem any more or less fragile than faux ivory. The stock is mahogany. There are the usual three drones, controlled by the mainstock drone switch; and a fourth drone, which is from the Northumbrian pipes design - there is a plunger in the end of the sliding section which, when pulled out, will unplug a hole in the side which plays a G; towards the middle of the sliding section is a ferrule which can be rotated a quarter-turn, opening another hole which will sound an A. Going from one note to another requires retuning. The regulators were built in the 70's or early 80's by Glasgow maker Pat McNulty, who was an engineer for Harrier, the company who built the English military Jump Jets. Ossian has a cassette tape of Pat's piping, Autumn Apples. The wood is blackwood, the metalwork is aluminum, with coil springs for the regulator keys, which are about 1/4"/6mm wide, mounted between narrow wood blocks. The regulators suffered a bad accident at some point and most of the key blocks on the tenor and baritone regulators were broken; the owner then had them skillfully repaired by pipemaker Kirk Lynch, who hooked me up with the owner. Kirk didn't repair the A and C (top rank) keys, though, so the tenor and baritone regs now only have four and three keys respectively. I made wooden endcaps for the regulators, since the Pedersen set's regulator bores are set too close together for the McNulty endcaps to fit. I only have the tenor and baritone regulators in the set at the moment, the bass regulator bar was missing so I had a brass piece made to replace it, which I mounted on the set but later removed, plugging up the holes in the mainstock. I will include the bass reg and bar anyway, if you wish to put it on the set. The keyed section of the bass reg didn't suffer any damage like the other regulators, either. It still has the original McNulty aluminum/plastic end cap and windcap. I made all the reeds, the drone reeds are elder. I'll include two chanter reeds and some spare reg reeds. The set I'd say is medium loud. I played this set most every day for about 5 years, when I got my first flat set; it was my concert set for a couple years more until I bought an antique set. So it's been played a great deal. On the MP3 samples I'm using the tenor and bass D drones, and the A/G drone.
Price: $2200 for the lot, which is less than what I paid originally - ah, the good old days. Quite cheap for a full set! Buyer pays shipping.

  190. SOLD: C.J. Dixon Practice Set - A practice set of uilleann pipes comprising a chanter by C.J. Dixon with bag and bellows by Kevin Thompson. The concert pitch rosewood chanter, made in 2005 by C.J. Dixon, is in pristine condition. The chanter has no keys or key blocks. It has artificial ivory and brass mounts and a brass "swan neck" chanter top. I've recently made a new reed for it which I've been playing for about 3 weeks. It is stable and in tune through both octaves – check the sound files. However, as reeds react to changes in temperature and humidity, I cannot guarantee the stability of this reed once it changes region. The oak bellows, made by Kevin Thompson in 1995, are in good condition. The paddles have a few nicks and scratches. I've recently replaced the gusset and the valve flap with treated black leather so it is perfectly air-tight. The bellows has a brass hinge and an elbow pad both made by C.J. Dixon. There are two superfluous screws on either side of the bellows – see photos. These are left over from the original leather bellows hinge which I removed as it was getting worn. I’ve fitted a black velvet cover for the blow-pipe which matches the bag cover. The bag, made by Kevin Thompson in 1997, is in excellent condition. It is made of a synthetic material (not sure which) and is perfectly air-tight, including the valve. The stocks seem to be of boxwood. My wife recently made a black velvet bag cover. The trim on the bag cover matches the trim on the bellows and blow-pipe cover. The practice set comes with a light but sturdy wooden case (22cm X 22cm X 57cm) which locks with a key – very useful if you have curious children. The case has a few bumps and scratches but is in good condition. I'll also include the Clarke Tutor (lightly annotated) and cassette and a leather popping strap.
I’m asking US$600 (neg.). Buyer pays shipping & insurance from Quebec City, Canada.

  193. SOLD: Gallagher 'D' ¾ Set - 04’. This black beauty is all in Ebony and brass. The mounts are all ebony. The chanter is fully keyed, f, g#, Bb, c nat. The keywork is clean and concise, finely sprung, very comfortable play. The set is very airtight, and comfortably positioned. Bronze regulator reeds, the regs are easily tunable. I had this set before and during the period when I worked at Seth’s shop, and I can say that this set exemplifies Seth’s standard of quality. The bottom of the mainstock is scratched from playing, but the rest of the set is in immaculate condition. There are no bellows with the set. The pictures were taken under several very bright lights, with the intention of showing the charector of the grain and exposing all the gritty details. The set is actually much blacker than shown.

I am selling this set for several reasons:
    • I’ve returned to college and won’t be working.
    • I’m getting married in April and need money for the wedding & reception
    • With school, I don’t have time to keep multiple sets working.

The set has played quite well. Since school started in Anchorage I have neglected it and the reeds, focusing on passing my classes. I’m also not much of a concert pitch player.

Currently the set is at the Seth Gallagher workshop to be inspected and perfectly fitted with reeds. Once a buyer has been selected, the new owner will recieve the set directly from Seth, after it recieves his approval.

As we all know, Seth’s wait list is 12-14 months. A fully keyed 3/4 set without a bellows should go for $5,225.

  196. SOLD: Seth Gallagher D Full Set - Pre-Ebay offering! The set is made of ebony, imitation ivory, and brass, and consists of the chanter with blocks for 4 keys, but no keys, wooden chanter top with stop key, reed by Michael O'Donovan. Three drones with cane tube reeds by S.G., three regulators with bronze reeds by S.G. Maple paddle bellows, L&M bag & green velvet bag cover.

I acquired this set used, as a half set in May of 99'. It was a couple of years old at the time. The chanter has the #47 stamped in it, possibly a serial #, and Seth' records would likely tell the date of manufacture. I received the wood chanter top w/key in Aug. 00' and the regulators (and new bag) in Feb. 01'. In Feb 04' the chanter was sent back to Seth for a minor bore adjustment/improvement that he now makes on his older chanters to update them to his current specifications.

The chanter has a great tone and response throughout it's range. The drones have been very stable and dependable, and have a volume and tone complimentary to the chanter.

The bass regulator has a straight bar, unlike most S.G. sets which have a Taylor style wrapped bass bar. This was my preference, which Seth was happy to accommodate. This also required a new bag, as the stock is tied in at a different spot. The bronze regulator reeds seem a bit stuffy to me. However, I'm not much of a regulator player yet, and several much more experienced players have tried the set and said I shouldn't complain and just play the things!

The brass has acquired "a lovely patina". One of the photos shows a similarly tarnished piece of brass (not from this set) partially polished with a Cape Cod brand polishing cloth.

    F.A.Q.'s:

    Have any alterations been made?
    1. Yes, on the chanter,it looks like a bit of black wax has been added to the upper side of 2 of the left hand toneholes, I believe by S.G., likely for tuning purposes. A common practice, and easily removable.
    2. On the drones, I added a brass nub to the tenor to aid in tuning. It is attached with soft (low temperature lead alloy) solder, and could be easily removed.
    3. To the regulators, I added cork bumpers to the underside of the key spatulas to quiet the action and eliminate excess key travel, also stabilizing intonation.
    4. The bag has a plug tied into a hole I put in it in a failed attempt at improving the location of the intake valve. The bag is completely airtight and the plug is non-intrusive.
    5. On the bellows, I added a pad and changed the location of the strap attaching screws, and cut about a foot of excess strap off. I'm kind of skinny, and if your capacity for Guinness is greater than mine, you may want a new waist strap.

    How much?
Seth's 05' price for a set with the same features is $7,225.00 with an approximately 10 month to 1 year wait. Based on several ebay sales in the last year and a half of similar S.G. sets that all sold for about 10% less than the same thing new, I am pricing this set at U.S.$6,500.00, plus shipping and insurance.

Will I break up the set?
    No.

    Why am I selling?
See Chiff & Fipple forum "pictures of your pipes" pg.69. Everyone has their "dream set" and I just took delivery of mine. My new set has keywork more like a modern woodwind and a slightly quieter chanter, which better suits my needs.

If I were keeping the set, what would I change?
I would have Seth put 4 keys on the chanter, and I might look into new regulator reeds.

This is a fine set of pipes from a very reputable full-time maker. It has served me well, but needs a new owner.
Included are a few extra chanter reeds.
If the buyer wants it, I will also include the case pictured. It is a sax case which I re-did the interior on.

    - More detailed photos available in Dave's Photo Gallery

  197. SOLD: Eugene Lambe ½ set in D - Eugene made the practice set for me in 1993 and then added the drones in 1994. The wood is African blackwood, and the fittings are brass. Imitation ivory is used on the chanter and bass drone. As a standard feature, Eugene bored and plugged the stock so that regulators can be added later. When he made the drones, I also had him scallop around the finger holes of the chanter. I have the original bills of sale and Eugene's flyer, which I kept to show at U.S. Customs, as I lived in Florida at the time.

This is a stable, well playing set of pipes with the rich Leo Rowsome sound. Eugene has played this set himself once or twice over the years. Eugene also made the chanter reed, which is made to the specifications described in Dave Hegarty's book. This reed is very responsive and easy to play.

The drones are extremely solid and have always played well. I have never had to think about them, so there isn't much to say about them.

I mounted a leather pad on the outside of the bellows. The pad shows signs of use. The straps are fitted with D-rings and hooks, so once adjusted they allow for getting into and out of the pipes quickly. There are two popping straps included. There is no case.

The set is air tight. I would say the condition is better than average. The brass shows very slight tarnishing in a few places. I believe this would polish out.

There are two extra chanter reeds made by Eugene Lambe in about 1996. They were bought as spares and have hardly ever been used. I tried them quickly the other day, and they both played, although neither matched the quality of the sound of the reed that is in the set now.

I played these pipes regularly for a few years and then came to realise that I just didn't have the time to devote to them that they deserve. I played them only sporadically for the past several years, and have now finally admitted to myself that it is time to let someone have them who will put them to good use. I am selling the set for 1,600 euros plus the actual FedEx shipping cost from County Clare, Ireland.

Some extras that I will throw in:
    • A chanter made by Nick Witmer in the mid-late 1990s. This chanter plays quite well with the above set, and it is a little quieter than Eugene's chanter. This chanter has had noticeable work done on it. It sounds fine, but it is not pretty! (It is better listened to than looked at.) This chanter comes with two Tim Britton-style reeds also made by Nick Witmer.

  199. SOLD: Kirk Lynch practise set - This is a left-handed set of Kirk Lynch Uilleann Pipes. I bought them three or four years ago and have been very pleased with them since. I'm selling them simply because I'm a college student who is in need of money and doesn't have the time necessary to put into playing the pipes. I've been playing Irish music since I was eleven and have done plenty of research and first hand testing on what pipes sound/play the best and what pipes simply aren't worth the time or money. These truely are some of the best pipes that I've ever played in my seven to eight years of search/playing the pipes. The tone is crisp and yet somewhat mellow, reminiscent of a flat set of pipes. Both octaves are easy to reach and strong. The bottom D is strong and stable and the rest of the notes are all well in tune with each other. I've taken good care of these pipes since the day that I got them (I've actually often referred to them as "my children") and can guarantee their quality.

Recently I checked to see what these pipes were going for now and found that the price for Kirk's pipes are up to $1900.00, plus I think a year and a half waiting list. These pipes are ready to ship at the drop of a dime.

Further information on this set of pipes:
    • Chanter was made by Kirk Lynch
    • Bag and Bellows were made by Seth Gallagher. There is a stock in the bag for the drones whenever someone might want to upgrade them to a half set. There is a slight air leak in the bellows, but nothing serious and easily repairable.
    • The set of pipes is about four years old and are in mint condition (minus the small leak in the bellows). I'm simply selling them because I'm a college student who is short on cash and in desperite need of that cash.
    • There is a white plastic insert on the E hole at the bottom of the chanter. This was something Kirk inserted when he first made the chanter. This was an experiment he was doing for tone and tuning.

  200. SOLD: Charles Roberts 'D' Practice Set - Made in the summer of 1995, in great condition with a new reed by Benedict Koehler which really sings. Comes with an extra reed by John Pederson. Made in African Blackwood with brass and imitation ivory fitted with a high C-natural key. Real hand-sewn leather bag with green velvet bag cover. Ba has drone stock cup tied in for later addition of drones as this set was originally supposed to be a half set but the drones were canclled by the original owner. Fitted the bellows pads myself and they work great. Selling the set to pay for a new chanter from Peter Hunter's shop. Great set for someone who's starting up and needs a relatively inexpensive practice set. Easy to play and sounds great.

  202. SOLD: Seth Gallagher Flute - This Gallagher flute is a beauty! Lined headjoint, 6 Keys, Grenadilla wood, low blocks (suitable for "piper" finger position if you happen to play that way), Bb is set to be keyed with the RH, Long and short F nat. The fact it is a 4 pc means it's very easy to store, travel with, and carry. The flute is light, easy to play, the keys are wonderful, and great sounding. Comes with a soft carry bag and has been cared for by a professional musician.
    A new Gallagher 2-pc 6-key in Grenadilla is $2700 (10mo-1yr wait). My guess is the 4pc is nearing 3k. I'm asking $2650.00
I am selling because I just had my 4 front lower teeth removed. Flute playing is a remote thought at this juncture.
Seth is a brilliant flute and pipe maker. His work is sleek and great soundng. He provides excellent support to all those who own his instruments (should they ever need it).
I would love to sell this instrument to someone who will really take care of it and make some music with it.

  203. SOLD: Robbie Hughes D ½ Set - Need to sell due to injury which no longer allows me to play. The pipes are blackwood/brass/imitation ivory with C and F keys. Bag and bellows are original, airtight and in good shape. The only known issues are a broken ring mount on one of the drones, and another mount loose. The Fnat key's spring broke and it was repaired by a regular instrument repair shop, but they used too light of a spring, so the key doesn't always close tightly if you use it. It will need to be repaired by a pipemaker if you are going to use it alot. The chanter and drone reeds are playing well at this time. The chanter will play up to high D (assuming favorable atmospheric conditions : ) and hit hard D fairly easily. The set comes with a hard case, but it's not originally a pipe case, so you have to do some disassembling to get everything in.

  205. SOLD: Brian Howard Practise Set - This is a pre-eBay advert! I purchased this set on 30th April 2005 and I paid £825.00 them. They’re still in pristine condition, of course, having been played very little indeed. They play beautifully, loud and clear and beautifully in tune across the octaves with a beautiful tone, far superior to my previous Roberts set. Although a novice, I found them very easily played with only a light bag pressure required across the octaves. You can read all about the set on Brian’s website: http://www.howardmusic.co.uk/Frameset%20howardmusic.htm

Made of two contrasting woods it is unkeyed but the beauty of Brian’s chanter is that any keywork can always be added later if and when desired. I personally never felt the lack of a C key as it appeared to me to be entirely possible to crossfinger satisfactorily. The chanter has the bottom iris fitted for tuning the "D’s".

I’m including 3 working reeds with the kit, two made by the Master Brian Howard himself at £40 a pop, and another made by me that plays well too. I'll include 2 of his unique brass peturbed staples both unused, some unbent bridles and a cane slip so the new owner can have a go themselves, plus Brian's very helpful DVD on reedmaking. (This is all stuff I bought as I went along - another £70 worth or thereabouts). I found every reed I made using Brian’s method and supplies was a good one – much to other piper’s amazement. There's also a (tatty) copy of Heather Clarke's tutor book complete with CD that I'll include and my trusty leather popping strap.

I've also a plastic toolbox I was hauling it all round in which I paid £20 for and which weighs a ton empty but is strong enough to sit/stand on or use to stop traffic. (It'll also take Low D whistles which is handy!) So long as the buyer's paying postage I'll include the box too!

Needless to say, Brian says I can offer the new owner continued and full back up from him for the future, and I guarantee his after-sales service is second to non.

I paid £825 for the practice set alone so over £900 spent on this little lot. I’d like to sell for £720 or very nearest offer.

Why am I selling? I continue to be passionate about the sound of other people playing UP’s but I’m not too keen on my own playing! And the volume is rather antisocial and doesn’t fit in with my circumstances too well, I find. Plus, truth be told, I’ve found my trad music soulmate at last – I’ve fallen head over heels in love with the fiddle and want to be single-minded in pursuit of perfection! I’ll happily answer any other questions if I can, contact me on jay.eye@bigfoot.com. I’m based in the UK in the West Midlands.

  209. SOLD: Brad Angus C Chanter - This is an exceptional chanter in C made of ebony and faux ivory from Brad Angus. It has a wooden chanter top with a stop key. Like all of Brad's chanters, the workmanship is impeccable. The chanter also has a C key and slotted blocks ready for the other keys if you want them. The chanter has a wonderful tone and is very expressive. You can adjust the reed from loud to very quiet just by squeezing the bridle-- this is a very responsive chanter and the range of tone color and volume you can get from this is quite impressive. It is in excellent condition and plays in tune through both octaves with no problems. It comes with five reeds, and I purchased it new from Brad in the fall of 2002. I am selling because I am getting yet another chanter in D and I mostly always play my D chanter, so this one has not seen much use. It needs to be played more often than I play it. I am asking $800.00 for it. A new one would cost somewhere around $900 plus the reeds.

Traditional Irish keyless flute in the key of D handmade in Wales U.K. by Alan Ginsberg. The wood used for this flute is rosewood (from Brazil South America) and the metal used is sliver rings. The flute is stamped twice with the maker's name, A A Ginsberg, and the Welsh dragon once above the first note hole and other stamp on the foot end piece. Thread hemp is used to join flute together.

The condition of the flute is excellent as the flute has no marks or cracks and is looking great. The colour of the flute is dark brown that shows the lovely wood grain appearing on the flute. The flute has a lovely sound, easy to play with no hard blowing to get the low or high octaves. This flute would suit beginner to immediate to advanced players. 221. SOLD: Geoff Wooff 'D' Full Set - This set was made for me in 1984 while Geoff was living in Australia. It has a narrow bore chanter in the key of D, and is quite sweet sounding. Materials are Boxwood, brass and politically correct 'ivory'. I just took it out of its box after being untouched for 8 years, and played it right away - to my somewhat surprise everything works fine, completely airtight, no sticky pads, sounds good.
All reeds are original Wooff (I have an own make in middle reg but original is still here, plus some assorted spares). Geoff also included a tape of the pipes, including some instructions for reed dimensions and so on, which the buyer is welcome to.
Chanter has 4 keys (F natural, G sharp, B flat and C natural) plus the air-stop key. Drones have stop lever of course.
No serial number (I guess this was before that time) but chanter and stock signed G Wooff.
Set is of course completely demountable like any other, including a nice slide fitting for the bass reg. The 'full size' box (own make) is California redwood lined with lambswool. I made it because its nice to just take the pipes out and play them, instead of disassembly/assembly/retune every time, but it is a bit heavy and awkward for frequent travel.
Bellows is also own make, 2 layers finest leather mounted at 90 degrees to eliminate stretch, hand stitched to ash (I think) boards, finished in mother-of-pearl and ebony, with sterling silver tied ends. 'Body moulded' lambswool-covered pads make this a very comfortable fit that doesn't wander around. (I had this bellows before, so didn't need Geoff's at the time).

  222. SOLD: Geoff Wooff C Chanter - Small-bore, two-keyed " C " chanter. Ten years ago, I was attracted to the small-bore sound and ordered a C chanter in ebony and brass with boxwood trim, two keys (F natural and C natural) and a stop-head from Geoff Wooff. Chanter arrived quickly, but my playing never progressed to the point of ordering a full-set. For non-musical reasons I have decided to sell it to a good home - along with a bag and spare reed from Geoff. Chanter is beautiful (boxwood is " old ivory " color and easier on elephants) and virtually unused ; several pipers have played and liked its tone. Unfortunately, I am not good enough to give a fair mp3 sample but I live in Paris, France, where you are welcomed to try it - bring a bellows. I am asking only what I paid for it at the time - €1 000 - plus postage. I will happily answer any questions and send any photos you wish.

  225. SOLD: Koehler & Quinn 'D' 3/4 Set - Chanter NOT included! Bellows; bag and bag cover; connecting blowpipes, mainstock and drones all of delrin with composite reeds; tenor and baritone regulators of ebony with phosphor bronze reeds. Basically, this is a 3/4 set WITHOUT a chanter. Many of you know this set and some of you have even played it. It is a lovely set of pipes. The bronze reg reeds are quite stable. I have not ever had to do anything with the drones as they are rock steady being of materials that are little if at all affected by climatological phenomena.

  226. SOLD: Andreas Rogge D chanter - Brand new D chanter in plumwood, brass and faux ivory. Has four keys F natural (ring type), G sharp, B flat and C natural. This chanter has a wooden top. The price I'm asking is what Andreas currently charges for a new chanter of this description but on offer here without the waiting time. I ordered this chanter on March 10th 2001 and just received it last week. I paid a lot more due to shipping and parts still extant etc. There may also be a stop key head at some point which will be for sale when it arrives.

This is one of the best Rogge chanters I've ever played and is very well in tune with a very responsive reed. This chanter vibrates really nicely in the hands and is a lot of fun to play.

  227. SOLD: Dan O'Dowd Full Set in C - No known date. Functional and ready to play, your purchase will include a comfortable bellows and a hard case. Originally a highland piper, I purchased these approximately 10 yeas ago but have not had the time to seriously practice as I have been stationed overseas in the Marines Corps. The drones and regulators are in great shape, and all keys are fully functional. I have little experience with the regulators, but the drones and chanter are reeded and ready to play. Stamped on the stock and the bellows is "Dan O'Dowd", but with no date. Besides producing a wonderfully warm drone and a crisp chanter scale, the rich blackwood and sparkling brass make this a gorgeous instrument. Will ship from Miami, Florida, USA - will discuss shipping costs with serious bidders.
    Best Wishes,
    Donald McCorquodale III

  1. FOUND: High quality practice set Looking for a high quality practice set from a well respected maker. I am in the US, so I prefer a set already in the US, though the nationality of the maker is irrelevant.

  2. FOUND: Quality D full set - Quality D full set of uilleann pipes with a four- keyed chanter, preferably with a stop key.
Conditions: I do not have the money up front, so I am seeing if anyone would be willing to sell a full set on a payment plan. The plan (depending on the price of the instrument) would be most likely a 36 month payment plan, and I would be happily willing to discuss either a set payment fee or healthy APR so the seller would make a decent amount of cash in interest from the payments--so both parties here are happy. I would gladly sign a promissory note for the transaction.
